Time Travel Story Name Generator
Titles for loops, paradoxes and trips through history
Generate titles for time travel stories: paradox titles like The Watch That Was Never Made, loops like Loop Seven, messages across the years like A Postcard From Next Spring, visits to history like A Brief Detour Through 1887 and plain-spoken puzzles like Tomorrow Was Tuesday.
About time travel story names
A time travel title has one job that other science fiction titles do not: it has to tell the reader that time itself is the problem. The usual ways to do that are a clock or calendar word used wrongly (Tomorrow Was Tuesday, Later Came First), a duration that should not matter but does (Fourteen Minutes Ago, Six Seconds Early), or an ordinary object in the wrong year (Wristwatch in a Pharaoh's Tomb).
The 1,000 titles here are spread across fourteen kinds of story. There are paradox titles built on the two classic knots: the grandfather paradox, where a traveler undoes their own existence, and the bootstrap paradox, where a thing has no origin (The Watch That Was Never Made). There are loop stories (Loop Seven, The Nine Hundredth Sunrise), messages sent across the years, visits to history and to the far future, romance across centuries, time agent procedurals, stories about machines and doorways, changed timelines, meetings with a younger or older self, tense play, exact durations, comic pieces and long lyrical titles.
Every title turns on time in some way, so the list works for a short story, a novel chapter, a serial episode or a writing prompt. Treat a pick as a draft: change the year, the weekday or the name to one from your own story.
How to choose time travel story names
- Decide which kind of time story you have before you pick. A loop story wants repetition in the title (Friday, Take Eleven), a paradox story wants a contradiction (The Effect Came First), and a visit to history wants a place or a year.
- A year in a title is a promise. A Brief Detour Through 1887 tells the reader the period in advance, so swap in the year your story really visits.
- Tense play is the cheapest signal that time is broken. Titles like I Will Have Been Here and Next Week Was Lovely work because the grammar is slightly wrong on purpose. Keep them short so the joke lands.
- Think twice before the title gives away the twist. The Woman Who Raised Herself tells the whole plot, which suits an ironic piece, while a mystery is better served by an image such as The Family Photo With an Extra Face.
- Search the title before you submit or publish. Time travel is a crowded shelf, and sharing a title with a well-known book or film makes yours harder to find.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good title for a time travel story?
It signals that time is the subject without explaining the mechanism. A misplaced tense (Tomorrow Was Tuesday), an exact duration (Three Hours Before the Bridge) or an object in the wrong era (My Phone Died in 1348) does that in a few words. Technical words like chrono and temporal are rarely needed.
What kinds of time travel stories does the list cover?
Fourteen: paradoxes, loops, messages across time, visits to history, romance across centuries, time agents, machines and doorways, tense play, durations and timestamps, the far future, comedy, changed timelines, meeting yourself or your family, and long lyrical titles. They are mixed together in the list, so one batch gives you several kinds at once.
How is this different from the sci-fi story name generator?
The sci-fi story page covers the whole genre, from first contact to colony ships, and gives time travel only a small share of its list. Here every title is about time: loops such as The Loop Has a Door, agency stories such as The Continuity Office and family stories such as My Mother at Seventeen. Use this page when you already know your story bends time.
Can I use these titles for my own story?
Yes, as they are or as a starting point. Nobody has compared the list with published fiction, so search a title before you submit or publish under it. If a known book, film or episode already uses it, change the year, the weekday or a noun.
