Generate old-time baseball team names in the manner of 19th and early 20th century clubs: virtue names like Ashford Resolutes, trade names like Millbrook Lamplighters, stocking colors like Elmwood Red Stockings, and club forms like Tannery Nine and Elmwood Base Ball Club.

About Old-Time baseball team names

Early base ball, written as two words for most of the nineteenth century, was a club game. Many early clubs were societies with one proud name, often an ideal or a local tie: the Excelsiors and Atlantics of Brooklyn, the Mutuals of New York, the Resolutes of Elizabeth. A team was a nine, so a town side could be the Tannery Nine or the Elmwood Base Ball Club. Later, uniforms and sportswriters did the naming: stocking colors gave the Red Stockings, and newspapers supplied nicknames such as Bridegrooms, after several Brooklyn players married, and Orphans, after Chicago lost its manager Cap Anson.

This list has 1,000 names in those manners: virtue names (Stony Ford Eurekas), trades (Harbor Town Oystermen), stocking and cap colors, firehouse and factory nines, railroad, river and farm towns, ward and street clubs, and 1900s town teams. Period nicknames such as Mutuals, Unions, Superbas and Perfectos belonged to real clubs, and the older ones were borrowed from town to town; here they sit beside invented or generic towns.

A small share are real clubs, each labeled: (historic, 1890s) after the Cleveland Spiders, (Negro leagues, 1920s) after the Kansas City Monarchs. The Negro leagues clubs belong to the twentieth century, not the 1860s game. The ethnic and Native American nicknames some clubs used are left out.

How to choose Old-Time baseball team names

  • Pick the decade first. An 1860s club under the old rules suits a virtue name or a plain club form (Alder Creek Actives, Whitford B.B.C.); an 1890s side suits a newspaper nickname (Amberley Orphans, Edgerly Remnants); a 1910s town team suits a league or town name (Tarleton Town Team, Calloway Independents).
  • Swap in your own town, street, mill or firehouse. The town halves here are invented or generic, so Depot Hill Switchmen can become your depot and your hill.
  • Tie the nickname to what the place made or moved. Old clubs were often named for the local trade, so a quarry town gets Stonecutters, a canal town Lock Tenders and a rail town Brakemen.
  • Write it the period way on the scorecard: Base Ball as two words, B.B.C. after the club name, and one plain color for the stockings.
  • Keep the labeled real clubs for history nights, displays and stories about those clubs. For your own team choose an original, and look around your league and region yourself to see that no other club already plays under it.

Frequently asked questions

What did old-time baseball teams call themselves?

Many early clubs took the names of virtues and ideals, such as Excelsior, Resolute, Eureka and Active, and wrote the game as two words: base ball. Town sides were often just a nine, which is why the list has names like Tannery Nine, Village Green Nine and Elmwood Base Ball Club. From 1869 stocking colors gave clubs their names, and by the 1880s and 1890s newspaper nicknames had taken over, in the manner of Elmwood Red Stockings and Amberley Orphans.

Are the names on this list real historic teams?

Most are originals written in the period manner, with invented or generic towns such as Millbrook, Depot Hill and Canal Street. A small share are real clubs, and every one of them is labeled in the name itself, for example Brooklyn Bridegrooms (historic, 1890s), Troy Haymakers (historic, 1870s) and Homestead Grays (Negro leagues, 1930s). A name without a label is not presented as a real club.

Why do invented clubs here use nicknames like Mutuals, Resolutes or Superbas?

Those nicknames belonged to real clubs: the Mutuals of New York, the Resolutes of Elizabeth, New Jersey, and the Superbas of Brooklyn. In their own day the older club names, Mutuals and Resolutes among them, were borrowed freely from town to town, so the list reuses period nicknames the same way, always with an invented town, as in Canal Street Mutuals, Ashford Resolutes and Castleby Row Superbas.

Can a vintage base ball club use these names?

Yes. They are written for vintage base ball clubs that play by 1860s rules, throwback nights, town-history teams and period fiction. Change the town half to your own and keep the nickname, so Quarry Hill Alerts or Clover Hill Haymakers becomes a club that sounds as if it had always played on your green. Before you order uniforms, ask around your own league to see that no other club already plays under the name.
