Titan Name Generator

In Greek myth the Titans are the generation of gods between the primordials (Gaia, Uranus, Nyx) and the Olympians. Hesiod names twelve: the brothers Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, and Cronus, and the sisters Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, and Tethys. Their children, Prometheus, Atlas, Helios, Selene, Leto, Metis, Hecate and many others, are usually called Titans as well, and later poets folded in the Gigantes (Enceladus, Porphyrion, Alcyoneus) and the hundred-handed Hecatoncheires.

What makes these names sound Titanic is their meaning as much as their music. Hyperion is "he who goes above," Mnemosyne is "memory," Prometheus is "forethought," and Iapetus is probably "the piercer." Most are one or two roots plus a Greek ending: masculine -os, -us, -eus, -on, and feminine -a, -e, -ia. Original names in the list follow the same recipe, combining roots such as astr- (star), bront- (thunder), keraun- (lightning), chthon- (earth), and hyper- (above) with those endings, so Astrapaios or Kelaineus sit naturally next to Hyperion and Coeus.

Because Titans are elder gods rather than monsters, the best names carry a domain. When you invent one, decide what cosmic thing the Titan personifies, whether dawn, memory, the sea's edge, or the axis of the sky, and let the name point at it.
