Generate names for great serpents of myth and fantasy: coinages like Amaranthe and Gorrundak, kennings like Girdle-of-the-World, god titles like Greatfather Scale, lindworms like The Lindworm of Hollow Fell, and labeled serpents of real myth such as Illuyanka (Hittite myth).

About serpent names

The great serpent is one of the oldest monsters in storytelling: a single enormous snake that circles the world, guards a spring or a temple, or sleeps under a hill until someone digs too deep. Jormungandr lies around Midgard with its tail in its mouth, Apep waits for the sun's boat in the Egyptian underworld, and the Hittite storm god needed a trick to beat Illuyanka. This list is for creatures of that kind, not for pet snakes, serpent folk or many-headed monsters.

Seventy-two entries carry a label in parentheses. Seventy are serpents of real myth and folklore, such as Mehen (Egyptian myth), Bakunawa (Philippine myth) and Lambton Worm (English folklore), and two come from Dungeons & Dragons. Every name without a label is invented for stories and games.

The invented names come in several registers: flowing coinages like Amaranthe, blunt ones like Gorrundak, long ceremonial names like Kavunaru, kennings such as Girdle-of-the-World, phrase names such as She Who Circles the Well, god titles like Greatfather Scale, demon titles like The Unmaker's Rope, winged serpents, giants of jungle, swamp, desert, river and cave, lindworms such as The Lindworm of Hollow Fell, temple guardians, and short names for a familiar or a mount like Ashlink.

How to choose serpent names

  • Decide the serpent's scale first. A world-coiler wants a kenning or a cosmic title such as Girdle-of-the-World or The Coil That Holds the Hours, while a giant snake in a jungle encounter is better served by what the locals call it: Old Vinebreaker, The Emerald Mile.
  • Pair a personal name with a title. Amaranthe or Gorrundak is what the serpent calls itself, and The Patient God or Eater of Horizons is what its worshippers or enemies call it. Using both gives players two clues to connect.
  • Use the lindworm names for a European folklore tone. The Lindworm of Hollow Fell or Wyrm of the Whinstone Crag ties the beast to one hill, well or churchyard, which hands you a quest location along with the name.
  • Keep the labeled names for the figures they belong to. If your story really features Apep or Jormungandr, use the name with its myth intact. For a new monster to fight, pick a name without a label, above all in place of a serpent from a living religion.
  • Vary the sound. Not every serpent has to hiss: a name with no s in it at all, like Olumarra or Thurmogg, stands out in a bestiary full of sibilants.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a giant serpent in D&D?

For a jungle, swamp or desert encounter, use a name the locals would give it, such as Old Vinebreaker, The Log That Blinked or The Sand That Follows. For a legendary serpent with a history of its own, pair a personal name with a title, as in Vessithar of the Inner Sanctum or Xulvandre the Unraveler. A serpent god or patron suits a title alone, such as Greatfather Scale or The Ninefold Coil.

Which names in the list come from real mythology?

Every entry with a tradition in parentheses. Seventy are serpents of myth and folklore, among them Jormungandr (Norse myth), Apep (Egyptian myth), Illuyanka (Hittite myth), Bakunawa (Philippine myth), Aido-Hwedo (Fon tradition) and Stoor Worm (Orkney folklore). Two more, Dendar the Night Serpent and Zehir, come from Dungeons & Dragons and are labeled that way. All other names are invented.

What is the difference between a serpent, a lindworm and a wyrm?

Serpent is the broad word for a great snake of myth. A lindworm is the serpent-dragon of Scandinavian and German folklore, usually wingless and often drawn with two forelegs or none, and wyrm is the Old English word for a serpent or dragon. In this list the lindworm and wyrm names are tied to a hill, a well or a churchyard, as in The Lindworm of Hollow Fell.

Can I use the names of serpents from living religions?

With care. Shesha, Mucalinda, Damballa, Aido-Hwedo, the Rainbow Serpent and Quetzalcoatl belong to religions and heritage that people hold sacred today, so they are not monsters to slay. If you need an adversary, choose an invented name such as Eater of Horizons or The Famine That Crawls instead.
