Hydra Name Generator

The original hydra has no personal name. Greek writers simply call it the Lernaean Hydra, the water-serpent (hydra, from hydor, water) of the marsh at Lerna, child of Typhon and Echidna, killed by Heracles as his second labour. Hydra names therefore come from its traits: the spring of Amymone where it lived, the poison (ios) that later tipped Heracles' arrows, the immortal central head buried under a rock, the crab Karkinos that Hera sent to help it, and the regrowth of two heads for every one cut off.

That gives you the classical recipe. Build a name from a Greek or Latin word for water, marsh, venom, heads or rebirth: Polykephalos (many-headed), Limnaia (of the lake), Iophoros (venom-bearer), Excetra (the Latin word for a water-snake, used for the Hydra itself), Renascens (being reborn). Such names sit naturally beside Cerberus and Ladon, the hydra's siblings.

Fantasy hydras follow a different logic. Game hydras are usually unnamed beasts, so a named one is built for menace: doubled sibilants and hard stops (Ssarethis, Vrakkoth, Zaraxxis), or a lair title such as Marrowmaw of the Black Fen. Give a named hydra a reason for the name, a place, a grudge or the number of heads, and it feels like a legend rather than a random encounter.
