Naga Name Generator

Naga names have two distinct roots, and the best fantasy names borrow from both. In Hindu and Buddhist tradition the nagas are divine serpent beings with formal Sanskrit names: Vasuki, who served as the rope in the churning of the ocean; Shesha, on whose coils Vishnu rests; Takshaka, Karkotaka and Kaliya, the great serpent kings; and Manasa, Ulupi and Kadru among the nagini. Sanskrit naga names often contain the words for snake themselves, so naga-, sarpa-, phani-, bhujanga- and uraga- all mean serpent and can be combined with adjectives for colour, element or virtue (Nilanaga, blue serpent; Vishadhara, venom-bearer).

The second root is tabletop and video-game fantasy. D&D nagas and yuan-ti, Warcraft's naga (Lady Vashj, Azshara, Naz'jar) and countless serpent cults use a hissing style built on doubled s, sh, th and z sounds, often split by an apostrophe: Sseth'rakan, Vashra'xil, Ssithral. These names sound sinister and are easy to hiss aloud at the table.

When picking a name, decide first whether your naga is a sacred guardian, a scheming sorcerer-king or a monster. Guardians and rulers suit Sanskrit-derived names and titles (Nagaraja, Guardian Mucalinda). Villains and cultists suit the sibilant style. Female nagini names commonly end in -a or -i, while male names end in consonants or -aka and -esh.
