Generate yuan-ti names in the D&D style: Mesoamerican-flavored pureblood names like Eztli and Sitlali, hissing malison and abomination names built from ss, th and kh sounds, plus cult epithets and serpent house names for Chult, Hlondeth or your own setting.
About yuan names
Yuan-ti in Dungeons & Dragons are the remnants of a human empire that traded its humanity to the serpent gods Sseth and Merrshaulk, and their names still show that double heritage. The official example names in Volo's Guide to Monsters and Monsters of the Multiverse (Asutali, Eztli, Hessetal, Issahu, Meztli, Nesalli, Sitlali, Soakosh, Talash, Teoshi, Yaotal, Zihu) borrow the rhythm of Nahuatl and other Mesoamerican languages, then slide in the long sibilants of a snake: doubled s, soft th, and clipped -tl, -hu and -ali endings. Yuan-ti names are not gendered; any of them can belong to a male, female or genderless character.
Caste shapes the sound. Purebloods, who pass for human, tend toward shorter, smoother names that would not draw attention in a Chultan market. Malisons hiss more openly (Sathissa, Ssaveth, Hessuka), and abominations and anathemas carry long, heavy names stacked with kh, th and gh (Ossulkarath, Thissarakh, Mersshulatl). Titles are earned by cult role rather than birth, so a nightmare speaker or broodguard is often known by an epithet such as Mother of Eggs or the Unblinking.
The generator mixes canon-style names, original coinages in each caste's register, epithets, and house and cult names modeled on the serpent houses of Chult (Se'Sehen, Hss'tafi, Eselemas) so you can name a single pureblood rogue or a whole temple of the Night Serpent.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name to the caste: keep pureblood names short and human-passing (Eztli, Izel, Tochtli), give malisons visible hissing (Ssaveth, Hissaket) and save the long, guttural kh/th names for abominations and anathemas.
- Use the -tl, -tli, -hu and -ali endings from the official list to keep the Mesoamerican flavor that separates yuan-ti from generic snake-people names like naga or lizardfolk.
- Add an epithet only for cult rank. A broodguard is just Hasskar; a nightmare speaker or anathema earns something like Hasskar the Cold Tongue.
- For a Chult campaign, tie the character to one of the canon serpent houses (Se'Sehen, Hss'tafi, Eselemas, Jennestas, Sauringar) or invent a house in the same pattern.
- A pureblood infiltrator may use an ordinary human alias in public, so give your character both a yuan-ti name and a plain Chultan or Amnian cover name.
Frequently asked questions
What do yuan-ti names sound like in D&D 5e?
Official yuan-ti names blend Mesoamerican sounds with serpent sibilants. Examples from Volo's Guide to Monsters include Asutali, Eztli, Hessetal, Hitotee, Issahu, Itstli, Manuya, Meztli, Nesalli, Otleh, Shalkashlah, Sisava, Sitlali, Soakosh, Ssimalli, Suisatal, Talash, Teoshi, Yaotal and Zihu.
Are yuan-ti names different for males and females?
No. The official material lists yuan-ti names without gender, and yuan-ti culture cares about caste (pureblood, malison, abomination, anathema) far more than sex. Every name here works for any gender.
Do yuan-ti have surnames or family names?
Usually not. Yuan-ti identify by caste, cult and sometimes serpent house (House Se'Sehen, House Extaminos of Hlondeth). A pureblood living among humans may adopt a local surname as cover, and high-ranking cultists are known by epithets rather than family names.
Can I use these names for a yuan-ti pureblood player character?
Yes. The pureblood and malison names are written for player characters in 5e, Baldur's Gate 3 homebrew or Pathfinder serpentfolk, and all invented names are free to use in personal and commercial projects.
