About lotr dwarf names

Dwarves in The Lord of the Rings are known to outsiders by names Tolkien borrowed from Old Norse, specifically the Dvergatal list of dwarves in the Poetic Edda. That's why Gimli, Thorin, Balin, Dwalin, Dáin, Óin, and Glóin all share the same clipped sound: one or two syllables, a long vowel (often marked with an accent, as in Dáin or Thráin), and an ending like -in, -i, -ur, or -or. Tolkien explained that these are the dwarves' public names in the Mannish tongue of Dale; their real names in Khuzdul are secret.

Dwarves also identify themselves by lineage and home. Gimli introduces himself as 'Gimli son of Glóin,' Balin becomes 'Lord of Moria,' and Thorin adds the epithet Oakenshield after his stand at Azanulbizar. Kings of Durin's line take titles like King under the Mountain. So a full LOTR dwarf name can be a bare Norse name, name plus 'son of' or 'daughter of' a parent, name plus a home (of the Iron Hills, of Erebor), or name plus an earned epithet like Ironfoot or Stonehelm.

This list covers Thorin's company and Durin's line, the Balin expedition to Moria, dwarves of the Iron Hills and Blue Mountains, and plenty of new names for a Longbeard warrior, a Firebeard smith, or a rare dwarf-woman such as Dís, whether you're rolling a character in The Lord of the Rings Online, running The One Ring RPG, or writing fan fiction.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick a two-syllable Norse-style name with a long accented vowel (Dáin, Thrór, Náli) and keep it, then add 'son of' or 'daughter of' when the character formally introduces themself.
  • Use a home for flavor: 'of Erebor,' 'of the Iron Hills,' 'of the Blue Mountains,' or 'of Khazad-dûm' places your dwarf in Middle-earth's geography.
  • Save epithets for deeds; Ironfoot, Oakenshield, and Stonehelm were earned in battle, so give one to a veteran, not a young apprentice.
  • For a MMO or VTT name field, drop accents if the game rejects them (Dain, Thrain) rather than changing letters.
  • Dwarf-women are rare and named like the men (Dís is the only canon example), so a female character can simply take a name from the same list or a Norse feminine like Katla or Sigrun.

Frequently asked questions

What language are LOTR dwarf names in?

The names we see, like Gimli and Thorin, are Old Norse names Tolkien used to represent the language of Dale, which dwarves used publicly. Their private names are in Khuzdul, the dwarven language, and are never revealed to outsiders.

Why do so many LOTR dwarf names sound alike?

Tolkien took nearly all of them from one Old Norse list, the Dvergatal, and he deliberately rhymed names within families: Fíli and Kíli, Óin and Glóin, Dori, Nori, and Ori. Copying that pattern makes an invented family sound authentic.

How should a dwarf introduce themself in Middle-earth?

Formally, with name and parent, as in 'Gimli son of Glóin, at your service,' sometimes adding a home or title such as 'Lord of Moria' or 'of the Iron Hills.' Epithets like Oakenshield come after a famous deed.

Are these names okay for LOTRO or a One Ring campaign?

Yes. Norse names are public domain and the invented ones here are free to use; if a game's name check rejects accented letters, drop the accent (Thrain instead of Thráin) and the name still fits.
