Religious Title Name Generator
Real clergy offices and invented sacred ranks
Browse 1,000 religious titles with no personal names attached. Real offices carry their tradition, as in Archimandrite (Eastern Orthodox) and Grand Mufti (Sunni Islam), and stand beside invented ones such as Keeper of the Ninth Bell, Voice of the Dawn and Mother of Tides.
About religious title names
A religious title names an office, not a person. Most hierarchies stack the same few jobs: someone leads the rite, someone teaches, someone keeps the building and its treasures, someone speaks for the divine, and someone is in charge of them all. This list gives 1,000 titles for those jobs with no personal names attached, so you can set one in front of a character you already have or lay out the whole ladder of an invented faith.
A little over a third of the entries are real offices and styles of address, and each of those carries its tradition in parentheses: Archdeacon (Anglican), Hegumen (Eastern Orthodox), Qadi (Islam), Rosh Yeshiva (Judaism), Tenzo (Zen), Granthi (Sikhism), Guji (Shinto), Flamen Dialis (ancient Rome). An entry without parentheses is invented and belongs to no real faith.
The invented titles come in ten styles: high offices such as High Luminary, temple keepers such as Keeper of the Ninth Bell, relic wardens, oracles and prophets such as Voice of the Dawn, militant orders, mystery-school grades, cloister ranks, nature cults such as Mother of Tides, offices for rites of passage, and styles of address such as His Radiance. Living offices with a single holder worldwide, such as the papacy, are left out because they point at a real person.
How to choose religious title names
- Read the parentheses first. A title with a tradition after it is a real office, so keep it with that faith and that period: Flamen Dialis (ancient Rome) has no place in a medieval abbey.
- Build an invented hierarchy from the bottom up. Pick an entry rank, a working rank, a house leader and one high office, for example Candidate of the White Robe, Shrine-Tender, Abbess of the Silent Orchard and High Luminary.
- Choose titles that carry a duty. Keeper of the Water Clock and Reckoner of Feast Days tell the reader what the holder does all day, which helps a scene more than a grand adjective does.
- Drop the label when a real title goes into your prose. The parentheses only sort the list, and spellings of titles from Arabic, Hebrew, Sanskrit or Japanese vary, so confirm the usage in a source from that tradition before you publish.
- Put a style of address before the office when a character is announced: His Radiance, the High Luminary. In everyday speech a shorter form of address usually takes its place.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real religious titles?
Some are. Every real office or style of address has its tradition in parentheses, as in Vicar General (Catholic), Khenpo (Tibetan Buddhism) or Mobed (Zoroastrianism). Entries without parentheses, such as Keeper of the Ninth Bell or Reliquarian of the First Shrine, are invented for fiction and games.
How should I use the real titles in a story?
Treat the label as a pointer, not as the last word. The real entries are listed with the tradition that uses them, but duties differ by country and century, and transliterations vary between sources. Before you rely on one, read how that tradition itself describes the office.
Why are some famous offices missing?
Offices that one living person holds for a whole faith, such as the papacy, point at a real person, so they are left out. Ranks shared by many holders stay, such as Cardinal (Catholic), Lama (Tibetan Buddhism) or Grand Ayatollah (Shia Islam), and so do single offices of the past, such as Pontifex Maximus (ancient Rome) and Kohen Gadol (ancient Israel). Personal names are left out for the same reason: every entry is an office.
What is the difference between a title and a style of address?
A title names the office, such as Abbess (Christian monastic) or Prior of the Fog Priory. A style is the formula used when speaking to or about the holder, such as The Right Reverend (style of bishops) or the invented Your Stillness. A formal introduction usually gives the style first and the office second.
