About religious group names

Religious groups name themselves in a few recognizable shapes, and a fictional one feels real when it picks the right shape for its size and temperament. Institutions take a structural noun plus a sacred image: Church of the Unbroken Wheel, Temple of the Still Water, Order of the Silver Flame. Small or reforming movements prefer kinship and membership words (Brethren, Fellowship, Children, Disciples, Friends, Remnant), signalling a family rather than a hierarchy. Groups that split from a parent body tend to get two names, a proud one they use themselves (the Restored Church, the Old Observance) and a dismissive one used by outsiders, often a founder's name with -ite or -ist attached.

The imagery does a lot of work. Light, dawn, lanterns and flame read as hopeful and orthodox; ash, veils, hollows, drowned saints and sealed doors read as secretive or heretical; hearths, plows, bread and plain cloth read as rural folk religion. Numbers (Seven Wells, Ninth Hour, Twelve Pillars) suggest a doctrine with inner structure, and invented saints and prophets (Saint Corvin, Sareth, Ondis) let you derive a whole family of groups from one root.

This list covers state churches, synods and dioceses, monastic and knightly orders, mendicant brotherhoods, mystery cults, revival fellowships and modern-sounding congregations, so you can name a whole religious landscape rather than a single faith.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the group's size first: a 'Church of', 'Synod' or 'Patriarchate' implies an institution with buildings and clergy, while 'Fellowship', 'Brethren' or 'Children of' suggests a small, intimate movement.
  • Give a schismatic group two names, the one it calls itself and the nickname its rivals use; the gap between them tells readers about the conflict without exposition.
  • Reuse invented saints and prophets across several groups (Order of Saint Corvin, the Corvinite Brethren, the See of Saint Corvin) so your world's religious history feels layered and old.
  • Match imagery to tone: dawn, lanterns and wells feel benign; ash, veils, hollow stars and sealed chambers feel suspect, which is useful when you want players or readers to guess a group's nature from its name.
  • For names based on real denominations or sacred terms, change enough that the result is clearly fictional; a made-up group that shares a name with a real congregation can cause confusion or offense.

Frequently asked questions

How are religious groups usually named?

Most follow a pattern of a structural word (Church, Temple, Order, Assembly, Fellowship, Society, Brotherhood) plus a founder, place, doctrine or sacred image. Sects and heresies are often named by outsiders after a founder with a suffix such as -ite, -ist or -ian, and folk religions usually have plain descriptive names like the Old Faith or the Hearth Way.

What is the difference between a sect, a cult and an order?

In everyday and fictional usage, a sect is a group that has split from a larger religion over doctrine; a cult is a small, often secretive group centered on a charismatic figure or hidden rite; and an order is an organized body inside a religion with its own rule, such as monks, nuns, or warrior-priests. The names here are grouped so you can pick the right flavor.

Can I use these names for D&D, Pathfinder or other tabletop games?

Yes. Many names are written with fantasy campaigns in mind: knightly and monastic orders for paladins and clerics, mystery cults and sects for villains, and fellowships and meeting houses for villages and towns. Pair a name with a deity from a god or goddess name generator to flesh out the faith.

Are any of these real religious organizations?

No. All of the names are invented, and real denominations and sacred names were deliberately avoided. Because naming conventions are shared, a few may resemble real congregations by coincidence, so search before using one for a real-world organization.
