About rank names

Rank names encode a chain of command, and most of them are older than the armies that use them. Sergeant comes from the Latin serviens, one who serves; lieutenant is French for place-holder, the officer who stands in for the captain; colonel descends from the Italian colonnello, the head of a column; and admiral traces back to the Arabic amir al-bahr, commander of the sea. Air forces, being new, borrowed from both traditions: the U.S. Air Force copied army ranks while the RAF invented its own ladder of Flight Lieutenant, Squadron Leader, Wing Commander, and Group Captain.

When you build a fictional military, the trick is to keep the ladder legible. Readers instinctively understand that a sergeant outranks a corporal and a colonel outranks a major, so an army that uses real ranks with a couple of invented senior titles (Warmaster, Lord Commander, High Marshal) feels grounded but distinct. Historical ranks such as Centurion, Hetman, Hatamoto, and Janissary give an instant cultural flavour, and structural titles like Company Commander or Wing Leader work in any setting because they describe the job rather than the tradition.

How to choose rank names

  • Keep the bottom of the ladder familiar (Private, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain) and reserve invented titles for the top two or three ranks where they add flavour without confusing readers.
  • Match the domain: naval forces use Ensign, Lieutenant Commander, and Admiral; air forces use Flight Lieutenant, Squadron Leader, and Air Marshal. Mixing them signals a joint or unusual service.
  • Use historical ranks (Centurion, Hetman, Hatamoto, Janissary) when you want a faction to feel like it grew out of a specific real culture.
  • Descriptive command titles (Platoon Sergeant, Company Commander, Wing Leader) name the job, so they slot into any fictional army without needing explanation.
  • Decide whether officers and enlisted ranks are separate ladders, as in most real militaries, or one continuous ladder as in many fantasy settings; it changes how characters address each other.

What is the order of military ranks from lowest to highest?

In the U.S. Army the enlisted ladder runs Private, Private First Class, Specialist or Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Master or First Sergeant, Sergeant Major. Officers run Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, then Brigadier, Major, Lieutenant, and full General.

Why is a Navy Captain higher than an Army Captain?

The two services developed separately. A naval Captain commands a ship and is equivalent to an Army Colonel, while an Army Captain commands a company. That is also why a Navy Lieutenant outranks an Army Lieutenant.

How do I invent ranks for a fantasy or sci-fi army?

Start from a real ladder so readers can follow it, then rename the top tier and one or two mid-tier ranks with words that fit your culture, such as Warmaster, Sword-Captain, or Legatus. Keep the number of ranks small; five to eight is plenty for most stories.

Are ranks like Field Marshal and Fleet Admiral still used?

They exist but are rarely awarded. The U.S. has not promoted anyone to General of the Army or Fleet Admiral since the 1950s, and the British Army stopped routine Field Marshal promotions in the 1990s, keeping the rank for honorary appointments.
