Rank Name Generator

Rank names encode a chain of command, and most of them are older than the armies that use them. Sergeant comes from the Latin serviens, one who serves; lieutenant is French for place-holder, the officer who stands in for the captain; colonel descends from the Italian colonnello, the head of a column; and admiral traces back to the Arabic amir al-bahr, commander of the sea. Air forces, being new, borrowed from both traditions: the U.S. Air Force copied army ranks while the RAF invented its own ladder of Flight Lieutenant, Squadron Leader, Wing Commander, and Group Captain.

When you build a fictional military, the trick is to keep the ladder legible. Readers instinctively understand that a sergeant outranks a corporal and a colonel outranks a major, so an army that uses real ranks with a couple of invented senior titles (Warmaster, Lord Commander, High Marshal) feels grounded but distinct. Historical ranks such as Centurion, Hetman, Hatamoto, and Janissary give an instant cultural flavour, and structural titles like Company Commander or Wing Leader work in any setting because they describe the job rather than the tradition.
