About nun names

When a woman entered a Catholic religious order before the 1960s, she almost always received a new name at clothing or profession, and the shape of that name followed clear rules. Most orders prefixed "Mary" to honour the Virgin, then added a saint (Sister Mary Agnes), a Marian title (Sister Mary Immaculata, Sister Mary of Lourdes), or a mystery of the faith (Sister Mary of the Passion). Many sisters took male saints' names because those were the patrons available in the order's calendar, which is why Sister Aloysius, Sister Ignatius, and Sister Francis Xavier were common in American classrooms. Latin virtue names such as Caritas and Misericordia appear in older houses.

Rank adds a second layer. A Mother is a superior, an abbess or prioress; in English Benedictine houses professed nuns have historically been styled Dame; postulants and novices are called by their baptismal or trial name until profession. Since the Second Vatican Council many orders let sisters keep their baptismal names, so a modern sister might simply be Sister Karen while her elderly superior is still Sister Mary Consolata.

For fiction, the name choice signals period, order, and personality at once: Sister Mary Immaculata reads as a strict pre-conciliar teacher, Sister Kateri as a post-1980 American religious.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the era: for a story set before 1965 use Mary plus a saint or title; for a contemporary sister, a plain baptismal name after Sister is more realistic.
  • Use a male saint's name (Sister Aloysius, Sister Thomas Aquinas) for a formidable teaching nun; the convention was real and instantly reads as old-school to readers.
  • Give the superior a title consistent with her order: Mother Superior or Reverend Mother for most active congregations, Mother Abbess for Benedictines and Poor Clares, Mother Prioress for Carmelites and Dominicans.
  • Sisters in one community usually avoid duplicate names, so vary the saints within a single convent rather than giving three characters Mary-something.
  • For horror or gothic settings, Latin abstract names (Sister Silence, Sister Misericordia, Sister Nativitas) sound austere without being disrespectful.

Frequently asked questions

Why do so many nuns have Mary in their names?

Taking Mary as a first name in religion honours the Virgin Mary as the model of consecrated life, and many congregations required it. The distinguishing part is the second name, so Sister Mary Agnes was called Sister Agnes in daily use.

Why did nuns take men's names like Sister Aloysius?

Religious names were chosen from the calendar of saints, and most canonized saints before the twentieth century were men. A sister who admired Saint Aloysius Gonzaga or Saint Ignatius could take that name regardless of gender, and superiors sometimes assigned names to avoid duplicates in the community.

Do nuns still get new names today?

Some do. Contemplative and traditional orders (Carmelites, Poor Clares, Dominican nuns, the Nashville Dominicans) still give a religious name at clothing or profession, while many active congregations since Vatican II let sisters keep their baptismal names.

What is the difference between a nun and a sister?

In canon law a nun takes solemn vows and lives an enclosed contemplative life in a monastery, while a sister takes simple vows and works in the world in teaching, nursing, or social ministry. In everyday English both are addressed as Sister, so either fits these names.
