About coven names

A coven is a gathering of witches, traditionally thirteen, though real Wiccan and pagan covens range from three to twenty and fictional ones can be any size. The word only entered common use through the Scottish witch trials of the 1600s, when Isobel Gowdie described her 'coven' of thirteen. Since then coven names have followed a few recognizable shapes: The Coven of [Thing], The Circle of [Deity or Symbol], Daughters or Sisters of [Goddess], a place name plus Coven, or a plant or moon phase used as a badge.

What separates a memorable coven name from a forgettable one is specificity. 'The Shadow Sisters' could belong to anyone; 'The Sisters of the Drowned Bell' implies a story about a bell and a drowning. Real covens often name themselves for a local landmark (Pendle Hill), a patron goddess (Hecate, Cerridwen, the Morrígan), a sabbat (Beltane, Samhain), or a plant with magical associations (rowan, yarrow, belladonna). Fictional covens in folk horror lean toward plain, ominous nouns: salt, bone, ember, marsh. Modern urban-fantasy and cozy-witch stories go the other way with wink-and-nudge names like The Coffee and Cauldron Club.

  • Anchor the name in something concrete: a local landmark, a plant, a bell, a hill. Specific images (the Drowned Bell, the Salt Road) age better than abstract ones (Shadow, Darkness).
  • Choose the collective noun to match the vibe. Coven and Circle feel traditional, Sisterhood and Order feel formal, Moot and Assembly feel old-country, House feels aristocratic, Club or Collective feels modern.
  • Naming after a goddess signals the coven's practice: Hecate for crossroads and necromancy, Cerridwen for transformation, the Morrígan for war and prophecy, Frau Holle for hearth and winter.
  • Numbers carry meaning in witchcraft: three, seven, nine, and thirteen all suggest a fixed, ritual membership. 'The Nine of Salt Road' tells you the coven's size and its home.
  • For a real practicing group, say the name aloud at a gathering before committing. If half the members are embarrassed to say it, pick another.
