Monk Name Generator

Monks in almost every tradition give up their birth name and take a new one at ordination, so a good monk name should sound like it was chosen rather than inherited. In Tibetan Buddhism the ordination name is usually two words with religious meaning (Tenzin means holder of the teachings, Dorje is thunderbolt, Yeshe is wisdom), often prefaced by a title such as Lama, Geshe, Khenpo, or Rinpoche. Chinese Chan and Shaolin monks take the surname Shi, short for Shakyamuni, followed by a two-character generation name (Shi Yongxin, Shi Dejian). Theravada monks in Thailand and Sri Lanka use Bhikkhu, Bhante, Ajahn, or Phra before a Pali name. Japanese Zen monks receive a dharma name of two kanji, like Dogen or Hakuin.

Christian monastics follow a parallel logic. A Benedictine or Franciscan novice becomes Brother plus a saint's name (Brother Anselm, Brother Juniper), an Orthodox monk becomes Father plus a desert saint's name (Father Seraphim, Father Silouan), and seniority is marked with Prior, Abbot, or Elder. Fantasy monastery names for D&D or wuxia settings tend to borrow one of these two shapes: either a title plus a nature image (Master Still Water, Elder Silent Reed) or a title plus a bird or plant (Novice Sparrow).
