Generate knightly order names modeled on real medieval military orders and royal chivalric orders: saints, relics, heraldic beasts, castles, and vows. Suited to fantasy novels, D&D paladin orders, and historical fiction.

About knightly order names

Real knightly orders came in two flavors, and their names still shape how we imagine fictional ones. Military-religious orders founded during the Crusades were named for a patron saint or holy site: the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John, the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, the Order of Saint Lazarus, and the Templars, whose full name was the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon. Iberian orders such as Santiago, Calatrava, and Alcántara took their names from the castles and towns they defended.

The second flavor, the royal chivalric order, arose in the fourteenth century as monarchs created elite fellowships: the Order of the Garter, the Golden Fleece, the Star, the Dragon, the Elephant, and the Thistle. These are named for emblems, heraldic beasts, or a founding legend, and often carry a grand prefix like Most Noble or Most Ancient. Late-medieval brotherhoods added vows and objects to the mix: the Order of the Sword, the Ermine, the Ship, the Crescent.

A convincing invented order borrows one of these frames and commits to it. Saint plus place suits a monastic order sworn to guard a road or shrine; heraldic beast plus adjective suits a court order awarded by a king; a vow or object (the Unbroken Vow, the Iron Gauntlet) suits a stricter fantasy brotherhood. Names here draw on all three so you can find a fit for paladin subclasses, kingdom lore, or historical settings.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide first whether the order is monastic-military (name it for a saint, relic, or holy site) or courtly (name it for a heraldic emblem with a grand prefix such as Most Noble).
  • Give the order a nickname; real Templars, Hospitallers and Teutons were all shortened, so an Order of Saint Aldric will be called "the Aldrics" or "the Grey Cloaks" by commoners.
  • Tie the name to a castle, pass, or coast the knights actually guard. Place-based orders (Calatrava, Montesa) feel grounded in a world map.
  • Use a distinctive color or garment (White Cloak, Crimson Tabard) so the name doubles as a visual identity in prose or art.
  • For paladin orders in RPGs, choose a name whose oath is implied: Order of the Sleepless Eye suggests a vigil, Order of the Penitent Blade suggests redemption.

Frequently asked questions

How were real knightly orders named?

Crusader military orders were named after patron saints and holy places (Hospitallers of Saint John, Knights of the Holy Sepulchre) or the castles they held (Calatrava, Alcántara). Royal chivalric orders were named for emblems and heraldic beasts such as the Garter, Golden Fleece, Dragon, and Elephant.

What is the difference between an order, a brotherhood, and a company?

"Order" implies a formal rule and often religious vows; "brotherhood" or "confraternity" suggests a sworn fellowship of equals; "company" was used for hired bands and courtly companions, such as the Company of the Star founded by King John II of France.

Can I use these order names in a D&D campaign or published novel?

Yes. Names like Order of the Garter refer to real historic institutions and are included for inspiration, but the invented ones are free to use in games, fiction, and worldbuilding.

How do I make a knightly order name sound evil or fallen?

Keep the formal structure but darken the emblem or vow: Order of the Sundered Rose, Knights of the Weeping Icon, Order of the Bloodied Gauntlet. The contrast between courtly form and grim imagery is what signals corruption.
