About region names

Region names sit between a kingdom and a town on the map, and they sound different from both. Real regions are almost always named for what the land is like or who held it: the Marches were border country, the Downs are chalk hills, a Reach is a long stretch of river or coast, a Fen is wet, a Wold is high and open. Fantasy maps from Tolkien onward borrow that vocabulary, which is why Greymarch, The Barrowdowns and Duskmoor Fens feel instantly legible even to a reader who has never seen them.

The list mixes four shapes. Compound names (Coldharrow, Thornwild, Redmarrow) label an area in one word and look tidy on a map. Descriptive names with the article (The Weeping Wastes, The Broken Teeth) are what locals and travellers call a place, and work well in dialogue. Invented proper names (Caldreth, Ostmark, Tessaly) read like regions with a long history and an administrative border, good for provinces and dukedoms. Feature-plus-owner names (Ormund's Reach, The Saltflats of Rhun) imply a story you can fill in later.

For a coherent world, spread the shapes out: a few grim descriptive names for the wild edges, compounds for the settled middle, proper names for the heartland provinces.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the terrain word players will actually use: a Fen should be wet, a Down should be rolling hills, a Reach should be a long coast or river valley. Players notice when a Moor is a forest.
  • Use the article for regions people talk about (The Cauldron, The Scorch) and drop it for regions that appear on deeds and maps (Ostmark, Averlon). A single world should have both.
  • Give neighbouring regions contrasting sounds. If the heartland is soft and Latinate (Aurelia Minor, Velmora), make the frontier harsh and Germanic (Wrathmoor, Skaldheim) so the border is audible.
  • Add a possessive or 'of' name sparingly (Corrin's Hollow, The Saltflats of Rhun); one or two per map suggests history, a dozen suggests a generator.
  • Write the name as a map label before committing. Anything longer than three words (The Pilgrim Road Country) should have a short form the locals use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a region name and a kingdom or country name?

A kingdom or country name describes a political unit with a ruler and borders (Valoria, the Kingdom of Arlen). A region name describes an area of land that may sit inside, across or outside those borders: the Frostmarch, the Downs, the Bitter Coast. Regions are usually named for terrain, a landmark or an old holder, which is why the names on this list lean on words like fen, reach, march and wold rather than -ia and -land endings.

Can I use these for D&D campaign maps and homebrew settings?

Yes, that is the main use. They fit hex-crawl and sandbox maps where each area needs a label, and they work as chapter or arc titles (The Drowned Marches, The Sundered Vale). The invented proper names make good duchies, provinces and baronies if your campaign has feudal politics.

How do I turn a region name into several smaller place names?

Reuse the root. If the region is Caldreth, the towns can be Caldreth Ford, Upper Caldreth and Caldreth Cross; if it is The Ashen Reach, the river can be the Ash and the port Ashmouth. Shared roots are how real place names cluster, and they make the map feel like it grew rather than being assembled.

Are these names only for European-style fantasy?

Most use English map vocabulary, since that is what D&D and most fantasy readers expect, but the list also has names with Norse (Skaldheim, Ulvenmark), Celtic (Caer Brannoch, Glen Torrach), Latin (Aurelia Minor, Provincia-style proper names) and desert or steppe flavours (Qeshmir Dunes, Ashkaran Waste, Iskandar Plain). Pick by the culture that lives there rather than by the terrain alone.
