About mountain range names

Mountain ranges are almost always plural or collective, and that shapes how they are named. English uses the definite article plus a plural (the Rockies, the Andes, the Pennines) or a generic like Mountains, Range, Hills, Fells or Highlands (the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Wind River Range, the Scottish Highlands). Other languages contribute their own generics: Sierra (Spanish for saw, from the jagged skyline), Cordillera (a rope or chain of peaks), Massif (a compact block, from French), Ghats (steps, in India), Alps (borrowed from the original range for any high chain), and Kush, Shan and Yoma in Central and East Asia.

The descriptive half of a range name usually says how the mountains look from a distance or what lives there: White Mountains, Black Hills, Bighorn, Sawtooth, Never Summer, Drakensberg (dragon mountain), Karakoram (black gravel). Some ranges are named for a people or a saint (Sangre de Cristo, the Cambrians), and a few for shape (Dragon's Back, the Remarkables).

Fantasy ranges follow the same rules with a heavier hand: the Worldspine, the Frostbacks, the Grimspine, the Titan's Ribs. A convincing fantasy map mixes one grand named range with plainer neighbours (the Grey Sisters, the Tarnwold Hills) and uses generics from several invented languages so different regions feel like they were named by different peoples.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Use the generic word to set scale and culture: Range or Mountains for English, Sierra or Cordillera for Spanish-flavoured regions, Massif for a compact block, Fells or Hills for lower, older uplands.
  • Name the range for what it looks like from the plains below (Sawtooth, Whitehorns, Dragon's Back), since that is who named most real ranges.
  • Reserve mythic names like the Worldspine or the Gods' Teeth for the single defining range on your map; too many epic names cancel each other out.
  • Sub-ranges can echo the parent (the Front Range, the Sawatch Range within the Rockies), which is a cheap way to make a map feel detailed.
  • Give a range an alternate name in a second in-world language, the way the Southern Alps are also Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, to hint at older peoples.
