D&D Kingdom Name Generator
Realms, empires and duchies for your campaign map
Generate D&D kingdom names that sound like they belong on a Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk map: single-word realms, titled monarchies, city-states and fallen empires. Built for DMs sketching a new campaign setting.
About D&D kingdom names
Kingdom names in Dungeons & Dragons carry a lot of weight for very few syllables. Look at the Forgotten Realms: Cormyr, Amn, Tethyr, Sembia, Thay, Damara. Most are two or three syllables, end in a soft vowel or a consonant like -r or -n, and sound like they were worn smooth by centuries of use. Greyhawk does the same with Furyondy, Keoland and Nyrond. The lesson for DMs is that a real-sounding kingdom name is short, easy to say, and does not describe itself: nobody in-world calls their homeland Shadowfen.
D&D maps also use descriptive and titled forms, and they signal government type at a glance. "Kingdom of Aldreth" implies a single crown; "Duchy of Harrowmere" or "The Free Marches of Tenmoor" implies a smaller or looser polity; "The Iron Concord" or "The Silvergate Compact" suggests a league of city-states; and "The Old Empire of Tyrr" tells players there is a fallen power whose ruins are worth exploring. Mix these forms with the list's dwarven holds, elven courts and sea kingdoms, and the map feels politically varied.
A kingdom named after its first king (Osric, Torvald), a river, a mountain range or a founding people will feel more grounded than one named for a mood. Then decide what neighbours call it; a rival kingdom rarely uses the polite official name.
How to choose D&D kingdom names
- Use plain, short names (Vaelmoor, Karthis, Amn) for old established kingdoms and titled forms (Duchy of, Free Cities of) for younger or fragmented ones.
- Give each kingdom a demonym before play starts, so NPCs can say Vaelmoorish wine or Karthian steel without you improvising.
- Vary the linguistic flavour by region: Norse-sounding names in the north, Latinate in the old imperial core, softer elven forms near the forests.
- Name at least one fallen empire; ruins, lost heirs and cursed regalia give you adventure hooks for the whole campaign.
- Check that no two kingdoms on your map start with the same letter or sound; players remember Cormyr and Sembia far more easily than Ashvale and Ashkar.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good D&D kingdom name?
Short, pronounceable and non-descriptive names age best. The published Forgotten Realms kingdoms (Cormyr, Tethyr, Amn) are one to three syllables and do not explain themselves, which makes them feel like real places rather than labels.
Should I use "Kingdom of X" or just the name?
Both are fine and both appear on official maps. The official title is useful for formal documents, treaties and heralds, while everyday speech uses the bare name. Deciding on both gives your world more texture.
How do I name kingdoms for different races?
Borrow the phonetics of that race's naming language: dwarven realms use hard consonants and apostrophes or hyphens (Karrak Dûm, Citadel Adbar), elven realms use flowing l, r and th sounds (Cormanthyr, Evermeet), and human realms vary by the real-world culture you are drawing on.
Can I use these kingdom names in my own published setting?
Yes, and in a home game you can use any of them freely. The list was de-duplicated and screened, but it was not checked against trademarks or other published settings, so search a name before you put it in commercial work. Cormanthyr, Amn and Sundabar are included as reference examples from the Forgotten Realms and belong to Wizards of the Coast, so avoid those in anything you publish.
