Every canon Pokemon region from Kanto to Paldea plus hundreds of original region names built the way Game Freak builds them: Japanese-flavored words, Latin and Greek roots, and real-world places reshaped into two or three soft syllables. Made for fan regions, ROM hacks, fakemon dexes and fan fiction.
About pokemon region names
Pokemon regions are almost always a real place wearing a light disguise. Kanto is the actual Kanto region of Japan; Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh are coined from Japanese words for castle, abundance and mystery, and Hisui is the Japanese word for jade. Once the series went abroad the trick stayed the same: Unova is Latin (unus plus nova, one new world, for the United States), Kalos is Greek for beauty (France), Alola is aloha, Galar carries a Celtic-British sound and Paldea a Spanish one. Spin-offs follow suit with Orre, Fiore, Almia, Oblivia, Ransei, Pasio and Lental. The pattern is two or three syllables, a vowel or soft consonant ending, and a pronunciation a child can manage.
The list opens with the full canon set so you know what is taken, then moves through originals in each house style: Japanese-sounding names for a home-islands feel, Latin and Greek coinages, and a long run of real-world regions reshaped the way Paldea reshapes Iberia. A final block is pure invention for anyone who wants something with no obvious source. Say a candidate aloud with 'the X region' and 'X Pokemon League' after it; if both sound natural, it passes.
Pick the real-world basis first. The region name should hint at the culture your towns, gyms and Pokemon designs will draw from.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide what real place your region is based on before naming it, then borrow a word or sound from that place's language the way Kalos uses Greek and Paldea uses Spanish.
- Keep it to two or three syllables ending in a vowel, -os, -ar or -oh; longer names don't fit the 'Welcome to the X region!' line or the map screen.
- Test the name in the phrases fans will actually use: 'the Veltros region', 'Veltros League', 'Veltrosian forms'. If the adjective form is awkward, adjust the ending.
- Avoid names that are already fan-famous (Tandor, Tohoak, Rijon) if you are publishing a fan game; players will assume you borrowed from that project.
- If you only need a sub-area, use the canon style of Sevii Islands or Isle of Armor: a descriptive English name for an archipelago or expansion area attached to a main region.
Frequently asked questions
Where do canon Pokemon region names come from?
Mostly from real places and words. Kanto is a real Japanese region; Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh are coinages from Japanese words; Unova is Latin for 'one new'; Kalos is Greek for beauty; Alola is a play on aloha; Galar and Paldea echo Britain and Spain. Spin-off regions like Orre, Fiore, Almia and Pasio follow the same short, vowel-ending shape.
Are all the official regions included?
Yes. The list starts with Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Hisui, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar and Paldea, the spin-off regions Orre, Fiore, Almia, Oblivia, Ransei, Ferrum, Pasio, Lental and Aeos, and sub-regions like the Sevii Islands, Kitakami and the Isle of Armor. Everything after is original.
How do I name a region for a fan game or ROM hack?
Choose the real-world culture the region is based on, pick a word or sound from it, and compress it into two or three syllables. Then name towns with one consistent theme and make sure the region name, town names and Professor's name (usually a tree) all feel like they come from the same place.
Can I use these names for an original Pokemon-style game?
The original names here are not from any official game and can be used freely in fan projects or your own monster-collecting game. Only the canon names at the top of the list belong to The Pokemon Company.
