Province Name Generator

A province is the layer between a kingdom and a town, and real province names almost always describe one of three things: the land itself, the people who settled it, or the ruler who was granted it. Many historical names come from a river, a mountain range or a coast, others from a tribe, and imperial names often picked up a tag such as Nova, Minor or Superior when an old province was split. Fantasy provinces sound right when they follow the same logic, so Westmarch, Rossmere or Carinthia Nova read as real places rather than random syllables.

Suffixes do most of the work. English-style provinces lean on shire, march, mere, wold, fen and holm; Romance provinces end in -ia, -ana or -enne; Germanic ones in -mark, -gau, -feld or -wald; Slavic ones in -ov, -ice or -ye; and a border region anywhere can simply be called a march or a reach. Mixing these across one map signals that the realm was built by different peoples over centuries, which is how most real countries feel.
