Generate names for fantasy lands, realms and regions in every style found on a good world map: Tolkien-esque compounds like Frostmarch, Latinate realms like Avaloria, Celtic and Norse-flavored territories, and descriptive lands such as the Sunless Reach. Built for novelists, D&D worldbuilders and game designers.

About land names

A land name is the label a mapmaker writes across a region, so it has to work in three ways: it must sound like the culture that lives there, it should hint at the terrain, and it must be short enough to fit between the mountains and the coast. Fantasy has developed a handful of reliable formulas. English compounds join a feature with a terrain suffix: -march (a border territory, as in Westmarch), -mere (lake), -fell (hill), -wold (upland forest), -moor, -fen, -shire, -dale, -reach and -hollow.

Latinate names ending in -ia, -oria and -ora sound like ancient, established realms (Avaloria, Hesperia, Valyria); they suit empires and old kingdoms. Celtic prefixes such as Caer (fortress), Dun (fort), Glen, Tir (land) and Ynys (island) give misty, mythic Britain and Ireland; Norse suffixes -heim, -mark, -holt, -fjord and -gard read as cold and hard; German -gau, -land and -mark suit imperial heartlands, and Semitic and Persian sounds (Qeshmar, Ashtareth, Al-Rashad) evoke desert kingdoms. Descriptive names like the Sunless Reach or the Riverlands are how locals refer to a place before any king claims it.

Below you will find all of these families, including classic regions from Howard's Hyborian Age and the Forgotten Realms for reference, so you can name a continent's worth of lands with consistent flavor.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Group your map by language family: give one coast Norse -heim and -mark names, the interior Latinate -ia realms, and the misty west Caer and Dun names, so borders are audible as well as visible.
  • Use terrain suffixes truthfully; -mere lands should contain a lake, -fell lands hills, -fen lands marsh. Readers notice when a Frostmarch is tropical.
  • Pair each named realm with a descriptive nickname (Valdoria, called the Riverlands) to show how insiders and outsiders talk about it differently.
  • Marches, reaches and borderlands belong at the edges of a kingdom; heartlands take shorter, older names such as The Vale, Cormyr or Ostland.
  • Say the name aloud with 'the armies of' or 'the people of' in front; if it trips the tongue it will trip your readers too.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a land, a realm and a kingdom?

A land or region is geographic (the Riverlands, Ithilien) and can exist without a ruler; a realm or kingdom is political, defined by whoever governs it. Many good fantasy maps name the land first and let kingdoms rise and fall across it.

What do suffixes like -march, -mere, -fell and -wold mean?

They are real Old English and Norse terrain words: march is a border territory, mere a lake, fell a hill or mountain, wold an upland forest, fen a marsh, holm an island and dale a valley. Using them accurately makes invented names feel historical.

Are any of these names from existing franchises?

Yes. Cimmeria, Stygia and Aquilonia are from Robert E. Howard's Conan stories, Cormyr and Thay are Forgotten Realms regions, and Tamriel, Valyria and Ithilien come from Elder Scrolls, Game of Thrones and Tolkien. They are included as style references; the rest are original.

Can I use these land names in my novel or game?

Original names and generic descriptors are free to use. Franchise regions belong to their rights holders, so avoid them in commercial work; instead borrow the structure, such as swapping Cimmeria for Kaldoria or Frostmarch for Tarnmarch.
