Original character names for Pokemon fan fiction, roleplay and art: plant, gem, color and weather names that sound like they belong beside Cynthia, Marnie and Arven, plus regional flavors from Kanto to Paldea.

About pokemon oc names

A Pokemon OC name has to pass one test: could this person plausibly show up as a gym leader, rival or professor in the next game? Canon trainers are named after plants (Erika, Iris, Juniper, Sycamore), gems and colors (Ruby, Sapphire, Cynthia from a Greek word for moon-goddess, Cerulean-adjacent names), and weather or nature (Misty, Brock, Skyla, Nessa). Villain bosses reach for something grander (Giovanni, Ghetsis, Lysandre, Lusamine). Recent games add regional texture: Galar names sound British (Hop, Bede, Marnie, Piers), Alola names are Hawaiian (Hau, Kiawe, Lana), Kalos names are French (Serena, Sycamore, Valerie).

The list above is organized along those lines. The first block is plants, birds, gems, colors and weather in the classic Game Freak style. After that come Japanese names (Touya and Touko are the Japanese names for Hilbert and Hilda; Kotone is Lyra), French, Hawaiian, British and Spanish names for Kalos, Alola, Galar and Paldea OCs, and finally a set of grander, slightly old-fashioned names suited to champions, Elite Four members and Team bosses.

Most trainers go by a single name, so a surname is optional. When you add one, keep it short and thematic (Ivy Blackwood, Zinnia Reyes) rather than a full realistic legal name.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the region first: British-flavored names for Galar, French for Kalos, Hawaiian for Alola, Spanish for Paldea, and Japanese for Kanto through Sinnoh OCs.
  • Tie the name to your OC's specialty type or signature Pokemon; a Water trainer named Marina or a Fire trainer named Cinder feels canon.
  • Reserve the grander names (Cassius, Delphine, Thaddeus, Aurelia) for champions, Elite Four and villain leaders; keep rivals and childhood friends short and friendly.
  • Skip names that already belong to major canon characters (Cynthia, Leon, Nemona) unless the OC is intentionally related to them.
  • Give a surname only if the story needs one, and keep it thematic and short like Steven Stone or Goh Sakuragi.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound like a Pokemon character?

Short, cheerful, and secretly meaningful. Most canon trainers are named after plants, minerals, colors or weather connected to their type, and they usually go by one name only.

Should my Pokemon OC have a last name?

It's optional. The games rarely use surnames, so a single name is the most authentic choice; if you want one for fan fiction, keep it short and thematic like Ivy Blackwood.

How do I name an OC from a specific region?

Match the real-world inspiration: Galar names are British (Callum, Maisie), Kalos names are French (Elodie, Lucien), Alola names are Hawaiian (Leilani, Makoa) and Paldea names are Spanish (Mateo, Ximena).

Can I use these names for a Pokemon fan game or comic?

Yes. These are common real-world and nature names, not trademarks, so they're safe for fan fiction, roleplay, art and fan games.
