Pokemon characters almost always go by a single name, and that name usually means something. Kanto's gym leaders are plants and minerals in Japanese (Erika, Sabrina and Koga are localizations, but Brock is a rock, Misty is water, Blaine is a blaze). Unova's Striaton trio are Cilan, Chili and Cress, three herbs. Galar's leaders follow the pattern too: Milo (grass), Nessa (Loch Ness), Kabu (from kaboom), Melony (melon), Gordie (a rock formation). Player characters take color and gem names like Red, Blue, Leaf, Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond and Pearl, while professors are all named after trees: Oak, Elm, Birch, Rowan, Juniper, Sycamore, Kukui, Magnolia.

Look for the hidden meaning: a Fire-type specialist called Sienna or Ochre, an Ice-type leader called Cirrus, a rival named Sorrel, a champion named Aurelia.

Good Pokemon names are short, easy to say, and slightly whimsical rather than dark or edgy. Two-word full names like Ash Ketchum or Goh Sakuragi are mostly an anime thing; the games nearly always stick to a first name and let the title (Gym Leader, Champion, Elite Four) do the rest.
