Philosopher Name Generator

A philosopher's name carries the signature of their era. Ancient Greek thinkers were known by a single given name plus their home city, so Thales of Miletus, Zeno of Citium and Diogenes of Sinope all follow one pattern, and an invented Anaxikles of Samos or Kallisto of Rhodes reads as instantly authentic. Romans used the three-part citizen name (Lucius Annaeus Seneca), medieval scholastics were named for a birthplace or monastery (William of Ockham) and later earned Latin honorifics such as Doctor Subtilis. In the Islamic golden age a philosopher might be Ibn plus a father's name or al- plus a hometown, while Chinese tradition prefixes Master, as in Master Kong or Master Zhuang.

When naming a philosopher for a novel or game, pick the tradition first, then the form: city-name for antiquity, tria nomina for Rome, place-name or Latin honorific for the Middle Ages, and a plain given name and surname for anything after 1600.
