About greek fantasy names
Greek fantasy names borrow the music of classical Greek without needing to be historically exact. Real ancient names were usually two meaningful roots joined together: Nik- (victory) + andros (man) gives Nikandros, Kalli- (beautiful) + ope (voice) gives Kalliope, Theo- (god) + doros (gift) gives Theodoros. Male names end in -os, -as, -es or -on; female names in -a, -e, -is or -o. Fantasy writers from Percy Jackson to Hades and Blood of Zeus keep those endings and the hard k-sounds (Kleitos, Kyrene, Kassandra) because they instantly read as Greek, even in invented names like Eudorion or Selenike.
Greeks did not use surnames. A character was known by a given name plus a patronymic (Nikandros son of Alkmaion), a hometown (Alkaios of Thessaly, Theano of Kroton) or an epithet earned by deed or trait (Kyrene the Swift, Hektor Citybreaker). That structure is a gift for fantasy: it tells the reader where someone comes from and what they are famous for in a single line.
The list mixes authentic classical names, names from myth and epic, original Greek-sounding coinages, and full heroic names with epithets, so you can pick a bare name for a villager or a ringing title for a demigod.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose the spelling style and stick to it: Greek-transliterated (Kallias, Kirke, Aineias) feels older and more mythic, while Latinized (Callias, Circe, Aeneas) reads smoother to English speakers.
- Give important characters an epithet or homeland instead of a surname, such as Theron Wolfsbane or Melantha of the Violet Hills, and let minor characters go by a single name.
- Keep the classic endings: -os, -on and -es for men, -a, -e and -is for women. Eudorion and Kallistheia sound Greek; Eudorius and Kallisthine do not.
- Mine real roots for invented names: kalli- (beautiful), eu- (good), theo- (god), nik- (victory), -doros (gift), -kles (glory), -krates (power).
- If you borrow a famous mythological name like Kassandra or Theseus, decide whether your world knows that myth, or rename the character to avoid readers importing the old story.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound Greek?
Two joined roots, a hard k or kh sound, and the classic endings: -os, -as, -es or -on for men and -a, -e, -is or -o for women. Names like Nikandros, Kalliope, Theodoros and Kyrene follow that template and read as Greek immediately.
Did ancient Greeks have last names?
No. They used a given name followed by a patronymic (son or daughter of someone), a city or region of origin, or an epithet. Fantasy writers usually copy this with names like Alkaios of Thessaly or Kassandra Truthseer rather than inventing family surnames.
Should I use the Greek spelling or the Latin spelling?
Either works, but be consistent. Greek transliteration (Kleitos, Aineias, Kirke, Herakles) feels more ancient and is popular in modern mythic fantasy; Latinized forms (Clitus, Aeneas, Circe, Hercules) are more familiar from older English translations.
Can I use these names for a Percy Jackson or Hades-style story or a D&D character?
Yes. The classical and invented names here are free to use for fiction, games and tabletop characters. Avoid lifting named characters from a specific modern franchise, but mythological figures like Ariadne or Orion are public domain.
