Historically, alchemists were scholars, physicians and monks working across the Islamic world and Renaissance Europe, so the most convincing names borrow from those eras. Latinate given names (Aurelius, Cornelius, Hieronymus, Perpetua), German and Italian craftsmen's surnames (Feuerstein, Argento, Vetriolo) and honorifics like Magister, Doctor and Brother all signal a learned, slightly secretive figure. Real historical practitioners such as Zosimos of Panopolis, Maria Prophetissa, Paracelsus and Nicolas Flamel are included as ready-made legends for your world.

Fantasy alchemists usually get one extra flourish: a surname or epithet taken from the trade itself. Quicksilver, Vitriol, Cinnabar, Athanor, Alembic and Crucible are genuine alchemical terms, as are the stages of the Great Work (Nigredo, Albedo, Citrinitas, Rubedo). Used as surnames they read as guild names or nicknames earned in the workshop, which is exactly how a real reputation-based profession would work.

For game characters, decide whether your alchemist is a respectable court physician, a back-alley poisoner or a wandering hermetic. A name like Dame Cordelia Ravenscroft, Old Mother Nightingale or Silas Verdigris tells the table which one they are meeting before a single potion is uncorked.
