D&D Wizard Name Generator

Wizard names in D&D have a distinct pedigree. Greyhawk's Circle of Eight gave the game Mordenkainen, Bigby, Tenser, Otiluke, Rary, Nystul, Leomund and Drawmij, and the tradition of naming spells after wizards means an archmage's name is also a brand: nobody forgets Bigby once they have cast his Hand. The Forgotten Realms adds Elminster Aumar, Khelben Arunsun, Halaster Blackcloak, the Silverhand sisters and Szass Tam, names that mix an unusual given name with a surname or epithet that carries a hint of legend.

For player characters, the strongest wizard names usually pair a slightly old-fashioned, scholarly given name (Aldous, Elspeth, Ignatius, Ottoline, Bartholomew) with either a plain surname that suggests a bookish family (Featherstone, Quill, Marrowick) or an epithet earned in study (the Grey, of Candlekeep, Half-Seen). Overtly magical surnames like Spellwright and Starbinder exist in D&D too, but they read best on legendary NPCs rather than a level 1 apprentice.

Wizards come from every race. Elves and gnomes are the classic arcanists, so Naivara Galanodel or Dimble Daergel are natural picks; tieflings and dwarves make memorable outliers. Red Wizards of Thay carry Mulan names with a foreign, vaguely Persian or Slavic feel (Aznar Thrul, Dmitra Flass, Samas Kul) and often append their home tharch. Choose the tradition that fits the school and the backstory.
