Generate Greek goddess names from the whole pantheon: the Olympians and Titanesses, the Muses, Graces, Fates, Nereids and Oceanids, cult epithets like Athena Parthenos and Artemis Agrotera, plus original goddess names built from real Greek roots for fantasy worlds and stories.
About greek goddess names
The Greek pantheon has far more goddesses than the six who sit on Olympus. Beneath Hera, Athena, Artemis, Aphrodite, Demeter and Hestia are the Titanesses (Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Tethys), the primordials (Gaia, Nyx, Hemera), the nine Muses, the three Charites, the Horai and Moirai, the fifty Nereids, three thousand Oceanids and a long roll of personified ideas such as Nike, Tyche, Nemesis, Eirene and Dike. Greek writers treated every spring, island and abstract virtue as a female divinity, which is why this list runs to hundreds of genuine names.
Those names follow a clear sound pattern. Most end in -a, -e, -is, -o or -eia (Athena, Selene, Thetis, Clio, Eileithyia), and many are compounds of real words: Kalliope is 'beautiful voice', Eurynome 'wide-ruling', Amphitrite 'surrounding the third', Pasithea 'all-divine'. Worshippers rarely used a bare name in prayer; they added an epithet tying the goddess to a place or function, so Athena becomes Athena Parthenos (the maiden), Artemis becomes Artemis Agrotera (the huntress) and Hecate becomes Hecate Trioditis (of the crossroads).
The generator mixes all of this: canonical goddesses and minor divinities, attested cult epithets, and original names such as Kallithoe, Chrysothea and Selenope that are assembled from the same roots so they sit naturally beside the real ones in a novel, a game or a Percy Jackson-style story.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick the tier that fits the role. Major plot goddesses should come from the Olympians or Titanesses; a local river, grove or city spirit is better served by a Nereid, Oceanid or nymph name like Galene, Pherusa or Neda.
- Use an epithet to show where and how she is worshipped. Artemis Brauronia and Artemis Ephesia are the same goddess with very different cults, and an original goddess gains instant depth from a form like Kallithoe Limenia (of the harbour).
- Keep one transliteration system. Either Latinized spellings (Calliope, Circe, Hecate) or Greek ones (Kalliope, Kirke, Hekate), but not both in the same text.
- When inventing a goddess, build the name from two roots with a meaning: kalli- (beautiful), chryso- (golden), eury- (wide), -thea (goddess), -dike (justice), -noe (mind), -anthe (flower). Chrysanthe and Eurydike read as Greek because they are.
- Check the name's baggage before reusing it. Some goddess names are also famous mortal women (Helen, Phaedra, Electra), and some personifications are unflattering: Ate is ruin and Oizys is misery.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the main Greek goddesses?
The Olympian goddesses are Hera, Athena, Artemis, Aphrodite, Demeter and Hestia, with Persephone and Hecate closely attached. Beyond them the most important are the Titanesses Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Leto and Tethys, the primordials Gaia and Nyx, and widely worshipped figures like Nike, Tyche, Nemesis, Eileithyia and Hygieia.
What are the Greek goddesses of beauty, love, wisdom and the moon?
Aphrodite is love and beauty, Athena is wisdom and craft, Artemis is the hunt and the moon, with Selene as the moon herself and Hecate as the dark moon and magic. Demeter rules the harvest, Hestia the hearth, Hera marriage, Persephone the underworld and spring, Eos the dawn and Iris the rainbow.
Are the epithet names like Athena Parthenos real?
Yes. Greeks almost always addressed a goddess by name plus epithet. Athena Parthenos, Athena Polias, Aphrodite Urania, Artemis Agrotera, Hera Teleia, Demeter Thesmophoros and Hecate Trioditis are all attested in temples, inscriptions or ancient literature. The list also includes a few original epithets attached to invented goddesses, which follow the same pattern.
Can I use these names for an original goddess in my own world?
Yes. The invented names (Kallithoe, Thalyssa, Nyktithea, Zephyranthe) are built from real Greek roots and are not attached to any existing myth, so they work for new deities in fantasy fiction, D&D pantheons and games. If you borrow a real name like Hecate or Nemesis, readers will bring its mythology with them, so use it deliberately.
