About greek kingdom names

Greek kingdoms were almost always named for a place or a people, never for a dynasty. Homer's catalogue lists the realms of the Bronze Age by their chief city or region: Mycenae, Pylos, Ithaca, Phthia, Argos, Knossos, Sparta (Lacedaemon). The classical age replaced most of them with city-states and leagues, but kingship survived on the fringes in Macedon, Epirus (the Molossians), Thessaly, Cyprus's city-kingdoms and the hill cantons of Upper Macedonia such as Lynkestis, Orestis and Elimeia. After Alexander, the Hellenistic kingdoms took their names from territories again: the Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt, the Seleucid empire, Attalid Pergamon, Pontus, Bithynia, Cappadocia, Commagene, Bactria and the Bosporan kingdom on the Black Sea.

When Greek speakers later needed new words for new states they still reached for geography: the Empire of Nicaea, the Empire of Trebizond, the Despotate of Epirus, the Despotate of the Morea, the Duchy of the Archipelago. So a convincing invented Greek kingdom is simply a convincing Greek place name, with or without a title; Greeks said Macedonia, not the Kingdom of Macedonia.

For invented names, build on Greek roots and endings: thalass- (sea), chrys- (gold), leuk- (white), hiero- (holy), -polis, -ia, -is, -os, -eia. Pair a coined realm like Thessalora or Kalydris with a real-sounding region and it will sit naturally beside Arcadia and Boeotia.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name the kingdom for its land or its people, not its king. Macedon, Epirus and the Molossians are how Greeks talked; the Argead or Aeacid dynasty is a detail for the history books.
  • Drop the word Kingdom when you can. On a map, Thessaly, Elis and Kalydris read more authentically than Kingdom of Thessaly; save the title for formal speech and treaties.
  • Use the era's own titles for variety: basileia or basileion for a kingdom, hegemony or league for an alliance of cities, despotate and duchy for a medieval Greek state, tyranny for a city under a strongman.
  • Invented names should follow Greek spelling habits: k rather than c, -os and -on endings, clusters like th, ph, ch and ps, and compounds such as Leukothera or Argyropolis built from two Greek words.
  • For a Homeric or mythic feel, pair a city with a hinterland (Argos and Mycenae, Pylos and Messenia) or give the realm an epithet like the Kingdom of the Lion Gate or the Wine-Dark Shore.

Frequently asked questions

What were the main ancient Greek kingdoms?

In the Mycenaean age the great kingdoms were Mycenae, Pylos, Thebes, Knossos, Argos, Sparta and Ithaca. In the classical and Hellenistic periods the major Greek-ruled kingdoms were Macedon, Epirus, Thessaly, the Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt, the Seleucid empire, Pergamon, Pontus, Bithynia, Cappadocia, Commagene, the Bosporan kingdom and the Greco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek kingdoms in Central Asia and India.

Were there Greek kingdoms after antiquity?

Yes. After the Fourth Crusade in 1204 the Byzantine world splintered into the Empire of Nicaea, the Empire of Trebizond and the Despotate of Epirus, with the Despotate of the Morea following later, and Latin rulers set up the Kingdom of Thessalonica, the Principality of Achaea, the Duchy of Athens and the Duchy of the Archipelago. The modern Kingdom of Greece lasted from 1832 to 1924 and again from 1935 to 1973.

How do I invent a Greek-sounding kingdom name for a fantasy setting?

Combine two Greek roots and finish with a Greek ending: thalass- plus -ora gives Thalassora, argyr- plus -polis gives Argyropolis, kall- plus -isthia gives Kallistheia. Keep spelling consistent (k not c, -os not -us) and put it beside real regions like Arcadia or Boeotia so the map feels continuous.

Can I use these names for D&D, Total War, Crusader Kings or a novel?

Yes. Historical kingdom names are not trademarked and the invented names are free to use in games, campaigns, mods, fan fiction and published fiction. The Hellenistic and Byzantine names work well for grand strategy and the Homeric and invented ones for mythic fantasy.
