About owlbear names
Owlbears are one of the oldest original Dungeons & Dragons monsters, a bear's body with an owl's head and a foul temper, and since Baldur's Gate 3 let players adopt a cub they have become one of the most-named creatures at the table. The right name depends on the relationship. A cub raised by a druid or ranger usually gets something soft and slightly absurd, like Hootbert, Pellet or Sir Fluffington, that plays on the owl half while hinting at the menace it will grow into. A wild owlbear the party is hunting wants a name the villagers would whisper: Gorefeather, Nightmauler, the Terror of Greymere.
Good owlbear names pull from three sources. Owl language gives hoots, screeches, talons, tufts, pellets and feathers; bear language gives bristle, maw, paw, hide, grizzle and growl; and the forest gives moss, bramble, thorn, bog and pine. Compound names such as Bramblebeak or Mossfeather combine two of those and sound like they belong in a monster manual entry. Old-fashioned human names (Barnaby, Wilhelmina, Mortimer) are the classic choice for a tame one, because the contrast with a two-ton predator is the joke.
This list covers cubs, companions, wild beasts, legendary named owlbears with epithets, owl and bear words in other languages, and plenty of silly options for players who name on the spot.
Tips for choosing a name
- Name a cub for what it will become: a gentle name like Dumpling or Muffin is funnier and more poignant once the owlbear is the size of a wagon.
- For a wild or boss owlbear, give it a title the locals would use (the Warden of Thornwood, Old Shriek) and let the party discover its 'real' name later, if it has one.
- Compound names work best when one half is owl and one half is bear or forest: Bramblebeak, Grizzlehoot, Mossfeather. Two owl parts or two bear parts feel lopsided.
- Baldur's Gate 3 players can use any of these for the cub; short names under three syllables are easiest to shout in combat and read cleanly in the companion UI.
- Add a physical tell to the name for a recurring monster (One-Eye, Split-Beak, Greypatch) so players recognise it on sight.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good name for the owlbear cub in Baldur's Gate 3?
Most players go for something cute and slightly ridiculous to match the cub's personality: Hootbert, Pellet, Biscuit, Sir Fluffington or Owlbert are popular styles. If you want to honor its mother, a fiercer name like Talon or Duskclaw also fits.
Are owlbear names gendered?
No. Owlbears do not have gendered naming conventions in D&D lore, so any name works for any owlbear. Many players pick the name first and decide the cub's gender later, or never.
Can I use these names for other D&D beasts and companions?
Yes. The cub and companion names suit any animal companion, familiar or ranger's beast, and the fierce names and epithets work for dire wolves, displacer beasts, bulettes and other woodland monsters.
What should I name a wild owlbear the party is hunting?
Use the name villagers would give it: an epithet with a location (the Terror of Greymere, the Hermit of Owlcrag) or a scar-based nickname like Broken Beak. It gives the hunt a sense of legend before the fight starts.
