About familiar names
A familiar is the animal or spirit companion bound to a witch, and its name usually says something about how the pair met. In the English witch-trial records that gave us the idea, familiars had oddly homely names: Pyewacket, Vinegar Tom, Greymalkin, Sack and Sugar, Jarmara. Those names sound like they were overheard in a kitchen rather than invented in a laboratory, and that ordinariness is what makes them unsettling. A cat called Tibbs who happens to talk is scarier than one called Darkfang.
Modern familiars pull from three main wells. The first is folklore and mythology (Hecate, Circe, Nyx, Puck), which suits an old, knowing creature that has served more than one witch. The second is the hedge-witch garden: herb and plant names like Rue, Vervain, Mugwort, Foxglove and Hemlock, which are especially good for toads, hares and mice. The third is the night sky and its moods, giving you Vesper, Nocturne, Solstice and Moonbeam for owls, bats and black cats.
The best familiar names fit the animal's temperament as much as the witch's practice. A raven takes a sharp two-syllable name; a plump toad wants something soft and comic; a bound spirit deserves a name that hints it existed long before the witch did.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the sound to the animal: crisp names (Rook, Hex, Jet) suit birds and cats, while rounder names (Puddock, Toadflax, Comfrey) suit toads, hares and rodents.
- Give the familiar a name from a different register than the witch. If the witch is Morgana, a familiar called Tibbs or Goody creates a memorable contrast.
- Herb names double as characterization. A familiar called Belladonna or Hemlock signals a poisoner's practice; Yarrow or Comfrey suggests a healer.
- For a spirit familiar rather than a flesh animal, pick a name from the folklore list (Pyewacket, Vinegar Tom, Boggart) so it sounds like something inherited, not adopted.
- Say the name aloud as a summons. If you can't imagine calling it across a dark garden at midnight, it isn't a familiar name.
Frequently asked questions
What is a familiar in witchcraft and folklore?
A familiar (or familiar spirit) is a companion creature said to assist a witch or cunning person with magic. In 16th- and 17th-century English trial records they were often described as small animals such as cats, toads, ferrets or birds with personal names like Pyewacket or Vinegar Tom.
What are the classic witch's cat names?
Greymalkin (from Macbeth), Pyewacket (from a 1644 witch trial and the film Bell, Book and Candle), Salem (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) and Binx (Hocus Pocus) are the most recognizable. Grimalkin, Tibbs and Vinegar Tom are older folklore options.
Can I use these names for a real pet?
Yes. Many of these are common pet names already (Luna, Salem, Ember, Sage), and the herb, celestial and folklore names work well for real cats, ravens, rabbits and reptiles.
Are these names good for a D&D or Pathfinder familiar?
Yes. Wizards, warlocks and witches in tabletop games usually name their familiars themselves, and folklore names or Latin-flavored ones like Corvus, Strix and Bubo fit most fantasy settings without clashing with the campaign's tone.
