Fantasy animals fill a different niche than fantasy monsters. A monster is a threat with a name like Basilisk or Manticore; a fantasy animal is part of the ecosystem, the thing hunters track, farmers fence out and travellers eat around a fire. The best invented species names borrow the logic of real natural-history naming: a distinguishing feature plus a familiar animal type. Real English does this constantly (red-tailed hawk, snapping turtle, star-nosed mole), which is why names like Silverhorn Stag, Glasswing Moth or Marsh Lantern Frog feel instantly believable.

There are three reliable structures. Compound single words (Moonhare, Ashwolf, Bramblecat) sound like folk names passed down by farmers and foresters. Two-part names with a descriptor (Ridgeback Tortoise, Copperfin Trout, Snowquill Owl) sound like entries in a naturalist's field guide. Fully invented words (Grimalkin, Duneskipper, Vellichor Butterfly) sound like something named by a scholar or a distant culture, and work well for the rarest creatures. Mixing all three across one world makes the fauna feel layered rather than mass-produced.

Geography and colour are your strongest tools. A name that mentions a habitat (Fen Heron, Peakhawk, Abyssal Anglerfish) or a material (Ironshell Crab, Copperhead Wyrmlet) tells the reader where the animal lives and what it might be worth without a paragraph of explanation.
