Griffin Name Generator

The griffin (also spelled gryphon or griffon) is one of the oldest hybrid creatures in art, appearing on Persian palaces and Minoan frescoes thousands of years before it became a fantasy mount. Classical writers described griffins as guardians of gold in the mountains of Scythia, forever at war with the one-eyed Arimaspians. That heritage makes Greek and Latin roots the natural first choice for a griffin name: aetos (eagle) and leon (lion) give us Aetos and Leontes; the winds Boreas, Zephyros, and Notus suit any flying creature; and the harpies Aello, Podarge, and Ocypete were literally named for storm and swift feet.

Because a griffin is half eagle and half lion, the best names balance both. Eagle-side names emphasize wings, sky, and keen sight (Skytalon, Brightplume, Keeneye); lion-side names emphasize pride, mane, and rulership (Proudmane, Regulus, Leonidas). In Dungeons & Dragons and similar games griffins are famously loyal mounts that bond for life with one rider, so many players give theirs a knightly, dignified name like Fidelis, Vindaris the Vigilant, or Custos.

Griffins in modern fiction have set a few conventions of their own. Buckbeak the hippogriff, Gwaihir the eagle-lord, and Fawkes the phoenix show that a single strong two-syllable name often lands better than a compound, especially for a companion who will be called by name in every scene.
