Owl Name Generator

Owl names come from a small number of very strong traditions. Wisdom is the first: the owl was the bird of Athena and Minerva, so those two names, along with Sophia, Sage, Oracle, Solomon, and Socrates, are perennial favourites for owl characters and for real birds in sanctuaries. Night is the second, giving Luna, Selene, Nyx, Nocturne, Vesper, and the moon-and-star names that suit a bird that hunts after dark and moves without a sound.

Fiction supplies the third source. Hedwig, Errol, and Pigwidgeon from Harry Potter, Archimedes from The Sword in the Stone, Owl from Winnie the Pooh, and the Guardians of Ga'Hoole owls (Soren, Kludd, Gylfie, Twilight, Digger, Ezylryb) are all household names, and Ga'Hoole in particular created a whole style of soft, invented owl names ending in -en, -ie, or -yb. Real taxonomy adds Strix, Tyto, Bubo, Otus, and Asio, the genus names of wood owls, barn owls, eagle owls, scops owls, and eared owls.

Finally there are the puns. Hoot and who jokes (Hootsworth, Whoobert, Whoodini) and owl-prefixed names (Owlbert, Owlivia, Owliver) are the go-to for mascots, plush owls, and lighthearted characters. Species names such as Tawny, Snowy, Barney, Scops, and Screech round things out.
