Generate orphan names for novels, games and roleplay: Victorian foundlings with parish-given surnames, street urchins with scrappy nicknames, fantasy wards raised in guilds and temples, and modern foster kids with ordinary, believable names.
About orphan names
An orphan's name carries a story about who named them. Children raised by relatives keep a family surname, but foundlings left at a church door or a hospital gate were named by whoever took them in. Real foundling hospitals in London, Paris and Florence handed out surnames from the day of the week (Friday, Monday), the place the child was found (Bridge, Temple, Stepney), the feast on the calendar (Easter, Christmas) or a blunt label: the Italian Esposito means "exposed", Trovato means "found", the Spanish Expósito and French Trouvé mean the same, and German foundlings became Findling. Governors also favored virtue names such as Mercy, Patience and Thankful.
Street orphans named themselves or were named by the gang. Those names are short, physical and often a nickname that stuck: Pip, Nib, Scraps, Tuppence, Sooty, Mouse. In fantasy settings the same logic applies, only the foundling is named for a bird, a plant or the guild that took them in, giving you Wren Ashfall, Bramble Tovey or Quill Ashbury.
Modern orphan and foster characters usually have perfectly ordinary names, and that is the point: the contrast between an unremarkable name and a difficult history reads as realistic. This generator mixes all four registers so you can match the name to the era and the tone of your story.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide who named the child before you pick: a parish clerk gives a virtue or place surname, a gang gives a one-syllable nickname, a relative gives the family name.
- Use a foundling surname as a quiet clue. Readers who know that Esposito, Trovato or Findling mean "found" or "exposed" will catch the backstory without a word of exposition.
- Pair a formal given name with an urchin nickname in quotes (Eliza "Mouse" Tremlett) when the character moves between the orphanage and the street.
- For modern settings keep names plain and period-correct for the child's birth year; an over-dramatic name undercuts the realism of a foster-care storyline.
- Avoid naming an orphan after a famous one (Oliver, Annie, Pip) unless the echo is deliberate; it pulls readers out of your story.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the foundling surnames in this generator come from?
They follow real historical practice. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century foundling hospitals assigned surnames from the place a child was found, the day or feast of discovery, a virtue, or a word that literally meant foundling, such as the Italian Esposito and Innocenti, Spanish Expósito, French Trouvé and German Findling. The names here are invented combinations that use those same conventions.
Can I use these names for a fantasy or D&D orphan character?
Yes. The bird, plant and trade names (Wren Ashfall, Flint Marrow, Quill Ashbury) are written for fantasy street kids, temple wards and guild apprentices, and the nickname-style entries work as aliases for a rogue or urchin background.
What makes a name sound like a Victorian orphan?
A plain biblical or royal given name (Thomas, Ann, Elizabeth) or a diminutive (Polly, Alfie, Nell), plus a surname that is either a modest English trade or village name or an obviously assigned one like Bridge, Parish or Saturday. Long aristocratic double surnames are the wrong register.
Are any of these names real people?
No. Every name is an invented combination created to sound plausible for its era and setting, so they are safe to use in published fiction, games and tabletop campaigns.
