Generate dystopian character names in every register the genre uses: nature-named YA heroes, Latinate elites from the Capitol, virtue names handed out by a theocracy, citizen numbers and designations, resistance call signs and canon names from Panem to Gilead. Built for novels, screenplays and tabletop settings.
About dystopian names
Dystopian names do work that ordinary names do not: they tell the reader who holds power and who the regime has tried to erase. The genre has settled into a few recognisable registers. Young-adult heroes carry plain, earthy names, often plants, birds or minerals, with short surnames: Katniss Everdeen and Tris Prior set the template, so originals like Wren Calloway, Sorrel Vance or Flint Oduya read instantly as protagonists. The ruling class gets the opposite treatment, with Latinate, overripe names such as Coriolanus Snow and Seneca Crane that signal decadence and old money.
Regimes rename people as a form of control. Zamyatin's We reduces citizens to D-503 and I-330, The Handmaid's Tale replaces women's names with Offred and Ofglen, and Puritan-style virtue names like Prudence, Obedience and Temperance suit any theocracy that wants to brand its subjects. Designations, ward numbers, titles like Proctor or Overseer, and the blank "Citizen" all belong in a cast alongside the rebels, who answer with stripped-down aliases and call signs: Mockingbird, Four, Lamplighter, Cipher.
The generator mixes these layers so you can name a whole society from a single list: heroes, elites, functionaries, the numbered masses and the resistance. Pick the register that matches each character's position in the hierarchy and the names will carry part of the world-building for you.
Tips for choosing a name
- Use naming as hierarchy: give the elite ornate Latin or classical names, the workers plain or numbered ones, and let a character's climb or fall show in how they are addressed.
- For a YA protagonist, pair an uncommon nature noun (Wren, Sorrel, Briar, Flint) with a short two-syllable surname; avoid names that already belong to a famous series character.
- Regime designations are strongest when they follow a consistent internal logic, such as letter-plus-number (D-503), patronymic ownership (Ofglen) or ward and cohort codes, so pick one system and apply it across the cast.
- Rebel aliases should be short and speakable in a whisper: a single noun or number (Cipher, Four, Nightjar) beats a grand title, and it hides the character's real name until you want to reveal it.
- Keep surnames anchored to a real-feeling mix of origins (Oduya, Petrov, Sato, Vasquez, Lindqvist) so the society reads as a plausible future population rather than a single-culture bubble.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound dystopian?
Contrast and control. Names feel dystopian when they are clearly assigned rather than chosen: citizen numbers, virtue names like Obedience or Temperance, patronymics like Offred, or job titles used as names. Against that, heroes get simple nature names and rebels use aliases. The gap between the ornate Capitol register and the numbered masses is what tells the reader the world is broken.
Can I use these names for a Hunger Games or Divergent style story?
Yes. The nature-and-mineral first names with short surnames (Wren Calloway, Briar Tennant) fit the YA district hero mould, the Latinate names (Cassius Orrin, Livia Strand) match Capitol-style elites, and the Dauntless-style single names like Four, Six or Rook suit faction settings. Canon names from Panem, Gilead, Oceania and the Glade are included for reference; use the originals for your own characters.
How do I name people in a society that has abolished names?
Pick one system and keep it rigid. Zamyatin used a consonant for men and a vowel for women plus a number (D-503, I-330), THX 1138 uses three letters and four digits, Gilead uses Of plus the Commander's name. Variations like Ward 17, Cohort Twelve or Subject 14-A work the same way. Rigid systems make the rare character who keeps a real name stand out.
Are these names good for a tabletop or video game setting?
They cover the whole cast list: NPC functionaries (Proctor Abbott, Warden Coyle), numbered citizens, resistance contacts with call signs, and named elites. The single-word aliases and designations also work well as faction ranks or as player handles in a regime-themed campaign.
