Generate 1,000 Victorian gang names for historical fiction, tabletop games and steampunk settings: district crews like the Lambeth Larks and the Saltley Sloggers, river thieves like the Wapping Night Plunderers and Five Points outfits like the Mulberry Bend Roughs. Ten are real historical gangs and the rest are invented in period style.

About Victorian gang names

Victorian gangs rarely chose grand names. Most were known by where they stood: a street, a district, a bridge or a pub corner, followed by Boys, Lads, Mob or Gang. Others were named for how they dressed. The scuttlers of Manchester and Salford, active from the 1870s to the 1890s, were known for brass-tipped clogs, heavy-buckled belts and peaked caps. That is why this list leans on real districts, trades and dress: the Ancoats Clog Lads, the Brass Buckle Boys, the Lamplighter Mob.

The 1,000 names mix many styles: district gangs from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and other British towns; New York's Five Points and Bowery, with a few other American cities; trade and tool names; marks of dress such as caps, belts and clogs; animals and birds; pickpocket crews and swell mobs; women's shoplifting gangs; river thieves and dock gangs; racecourse sharps; child gangs; pub and landmark corners; gangs named for a leader; and penny-dreadful titles.

Ten entries are real, long-defunct names kept as anchors of the style: the Scuttlers, the Peaky Blinders, the High Rip, the Forty Elephants, the Dead Rabbits, the Bowery Boys, the Plug Uglies, the Whyos, the Daybreak Boys and the Swamp Angels. Everything else is invented for fiction and games, though the places are real.

How to choose Victorian gang names

  • Start with the map. Pick the street, bridge or works where your gang gathers, then add a plain group word. A name like the Garrison Lane Guards or the Canal Bridge Mob tells readers the territory at once.
  • Give the gang a visible mark. Period gangs were recognized by their dress, so a name such as the Red Muffler Mob or the Studded Belts doubles as a costume note for your scene.
  • Match the name to the racket. Pickpockets suit crowded places (the Oxford Street Dippers), river thieves suit stairs, docks and tides (the Flood Tide Forty), and racecourse gangs suit a course or a race day (the Derby Day Dodgers).
  • For steampunk or penny-dreadful stories, pick from the theatrical end of the list. The Skeleton Key Society or the Dark Lantern League reads as a villain's club rather than a street-corner crowd.
  • Keep the ten real gangs for stories set in their own city and decade, and use an invented name when you want freedom with the plot.

Frequently asked questions

Which names on this list are real Victorian gangs?

Ten: the Scuttlers, the Peaky Blinders, the High Rip, the Forty Elephants, the Dead Rabbits, the Bowery Boys, the Plug Uglies, the Whyos, the Daybreak Boys and the Swamp Angels. All are long defunct. The rest are invented in the same style, and because a street plus Boys or Lads is such a natural pattern, an invented name may match a gang that once existed by chance.

How were real Victorian gangs named?

Mostly by territory: a street, district or meeting place plus a plain word such as Boys, Lads, Mob or Gang. Others took a nickname from their dress or habits, which is the model for invented names here like the Brass-Tipped Clogs and the Peaked Cap Lads.

Does the list cover the Five Points and Bowery gangs of New York?

Yes. A share of the list is set in New York and other American cities of the same decades, with names like the Mulberry Bend Roughs, the Bottle Alley Brawlers and the Sixth Ward Soap Locks. Apart from the historical gangs named above, they are original names for your own stories and are not taken from any film or series.

Can I use these names in a novel, game or tabletop campaign?

Yes, that is what they are for. The invented names use real districts as settings, so check that the place suits your city and decade. If it matters that nobody else has used a name, search for it yourself before you publish.
