Character Name Generator

A character name has to do two jobs a real name never has to: be remembered by a reader who meets hundreds of names, and hint at who the person is before they speak. Writers have always cheated a little here. Dickens gave Ebenezer Scrooge a name you can hear scraping; Austen gave her heroines plain names (Anne, Elizabeth, Emma) and her snobs grander ones. The names here lean the same way: real, plausible first and last names chosen for rhythm and texture, such as Wren Calloway, Silas Okonkwo and Perpetua Finch, rather than the statistical middle of the phone book.

A few practical conventions help. Readers track characters by first letter and shape, so a cast should not contain Marlowe, Margot and Maren. Two-syllable first names with a one- or three-syllable surname tend to scan well (Theo Marchetti, Ida Blackwood). Hard consonants (K, G, T) read as tough or brisk; soft sounds (L, M, S) read as gentle or sly. Old-fashioned names (Hester, Ambrose) suggest age or tradition; clipped nicknames (Kit, Gus, Billie) suggest informality.

The list mixes eras and backgrounds, with names to suit a 1920s detective, a modern teenager, a small-town sheriff or a London barrister. Pick the one whose sound matches the role, then check that no one else in your story shares its opening letter.
