Monster Name Generator

A monster name does its work before the creature ever appears. Harsh consonant clusters (kr, gr, zh, thr) and closed syllables signal something brutish, which is why names like Vulthrax, Ghazrek and Skulzar read as beasts while Sussuvial or Ilquith read as something older and wetter that should not be looked at directly. English folklore takes the opposite approach: its monsters have homely, almost affectionate names (Black Annis, Jenny Greenteeth, Rawhead) that are frightening precisely because they sound like neighbours.

This generator mixes four styles so you can match the tone of your setting. Guttural invented names suit orc-like brutes, trolls and cave horrors. Descriptive compounds (Marrowtooth, Gallowmaw, Lanternjaw) name a creature by its most memorable feature, the way villagers or monster hunters would. Titled dreads (The Sallow King, The Thing Under Dunmere, Ulgreth Who Waits) work for boss monsters and campaign villains whose true name nobody knows. Folk-horror bogeys like Tallow Jack and Rattle-Bones Nan suit cosy-creepy or grimdark settings alike.

For a hunt or a horror campaign, give a monster two names: the one the locals use, and the one scholars or cultists use, and let the players discover that they describe the same thing.
