About cryptid names

Cryptids are creatures whose existence is claimed by folklore or eyewitnesses but not confirmed by science: Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, Mothman, the Chupacabra, the Jersey Devil. Their names are unlike fantasy monster names because they were coined by newspapers, locals, and campfire storytellers rather than by authors.   • Keep the creature word ordinary: beast, man, dog, worm, serpent, thing. Newspapers in 1974 did not write 'wraith.'
  • Use a portmanteau for a headline-friendly nickname (Mothman, Sheepsquatch) and a longer descriptive name for the local version; real cryptids often have both.
  • For lake monsters, give it a friendly diminutive (Nessie, Champ, Tessie). Affectionate names are a genuine hallmark of the genre and signal a tourist-board relationship with the legend.
  • Add a single odd behavior instead of a horror adjective. The Woodknocker, the Rockthrower, and the Roadside Kneeler suggest an actual sighting.
