Horror Name Generator

Horror names work differently from fantasy names. The scariest villains in the genre are rarely called something obviously evil; they are called Michael Myers, Annabelle, Pennywise, Freddy Krueger, or simply 'the Entity.' The dread comes from contrast: an ordinary, even homely name attached to something monstrous, or a plain description (the Tall Man, the Pale Man, the Babadook) that refuses to explain itself. This generator leans on those conventions, mixing three broad styles: descriptive epithets for unnamed threats, deliberately old-fashioned human names for killers, cultists, and cursed families, and place names for the houses, wards, and towns where the story happens.

Human horror names tend to draw on Puritan and Victorian stock (Hester, Ephraim, Absalom, Prudence, Enoch) paired with short, hard surnames like Voss, Cray, Marrow, or Gaunt. Titles do a lot of work too: Dr., Nurse, Father, Sister, and Warden signal an authority figure who should be safe and is not. Group names such as the Congregation of the Open Door or the Choir of Teeth borrow the polite blandness of real cults, which reads as far creepier than anything openly demonic.

For an entity, the trick is to name it after a single behavior or sensation: the Whistler, the Hush, the Gnawing, the Thing in the Static. Keep it short, keep it specific, and let the reader's imagination fill in the rest.
