Generate plant monster names for D&D, horror stories and games: carnivorous flowers like Mawflower and Gulping Orchid, stranglers like Strangle-Ivy and Noosecreeper, thorn beasts like Briarwolf, and local legends like Old Mother Thornroot.

About plant monster names

A plant monster name has one job: tell the table that the scenery is hungry. The most reliable recipe is a plant word welded to a threat. Take a part of the plant (petal, tendril, root, husk, bough) or a kind of plant (lily, ivy, bramble, yew) and add what it does: Mawflower, Noosecreeper, Thornfist, Gallows Elm. Compound words read like the common name a frightened villager would use, while two-word names such as Gulping Orchid or Bramble Brute read like entries in a bestiary.

The 1,000 names are mixed from fifteen styles: carnivorous flowers and flytraps, strangling vines, walking thorn and bramble beasts, swamp and rot plants, cursed trees and stumps, seed-pod doubles that copy people, a small share of fungal things, harvest and orchard horrors, plants of the desert, sea, jungle, cave and snow, tiny seedling pests, and boss titles such as Mother of Brambles. Local legends come in two shapes, a familiar name (Old Mother Thornroot, Granny Bindweed) or a place (The Corpse Lily of Hob's Lane), and both suit a creature one village fears.

The Latin-looking names, such as Mordiflora vorax, are made up to sound like a scholar's label and are not real species. A handful of friendly names (Nibbles the Flytrap, Grumpy Turnip) are there for light games.

How to choose plant monster names

  • Decide how it attacks before you name it. A plant that swallows suits mouth words (Gulping Orchid, Lockjaw Lotus), one that squeezes suits rope words (Garrote Vine, The Green Noose), and one that walks and tears suits thorn words (Briarwolf, Hedgerow Ripper).
  • Give a boss two names: the one villagers whisper and the label in a scholar's field journal. Old Hobbleroot in the tavern can be Radicigradus peregrinus in the wizard's notes.
  • Tie a legend to your own map. Swap the lane, mill or abbey in a name like The Maw of Mossgate Abbey for a place your players already know.
  • Match the name to the tone of the game. Seedling of the Pit and The Husk That Smiles belong in horror, while Sir Chomps-a-Lot and Cranky Cabbage belong in a cozy or comic session.
  • Use the small names for swarms and a title for the thing that grew them. A cellar full of Bramble Whelps lands harder when Mother of Brambles waits at the end.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a plant monster?

For a carnivorous flower try Mawflower, Snapjaw Lily or Rotblossom. For a strangling vine, Strangle-Ivy, Gravevine Lasher or Kudzu Wraith work well, and for a walking thicket try Bramble Brute or Thornhide Charger. A boss can carry a title such as The Thousand-Petaled Hunger or Mother of Brambles.

Are these official D&D monsters?

No. The list is meant for homebrew creatures and was not copied from a rulebook, so there are no stat blocks behind the names. Pair a name with a creature you build yourself or reskin an existing one. The names have not been compared against published games, so check for yourself before you publish an adventure.

Are the Latin names real species?

No. Names like Mordiflora vorax, Strangulivitis nocturna and Spinambulus horridus are mock Latin, invented to look like the labels in a naturalist's notebook. They describe nothing in a real garden or forest and should never be used to identify a real plant.

Can I use these for a friendly or funny plant creature?

Yes. Part of the list is written for light games: Nibbles the Flytrap, Pouty Petunia, Wiggleroot, Grabby Gus and The Hungry Houseplant suit a familiar, a mascot or a garden pest that is more nuisance than threat. The small names such as Petal Imp and Twig Goblin also work for harmless minions.
