Lancer Name Generator

The word lancer covers three quite different traditions, and each has its own naming flavor. The first is the medieval knight of the tilt yard, whose lance was as much a sporting instrument as a weapon: names here follow the Sir-plus-Norman-French pattern of Arthurian romance (Sir Gawain, Sir Bors de Ganis) or of real tournament champions like Ulrich von Liechtenstein and Jacques de Lalaing. The second is the light-cavalry lancer of the 18th and 19th centuries, a role the Polish uhlans exported to nearly every European army; the Bengal Lancers of British India added regimental ranks such as risaldar and sowar. These names are simply real names from Poland, France, Prussia, Russia, Britain, and the Punjab, often prefixed with a rank.

The third tradition is the fantasy lancer or dragoon: the leaping, dragon-slaying spearman of Final Fantasy (Kain Highwind, Estinien) and the pegasus and wyvern riders of Fire Emblem (Cordelia, Ephraim, Camus), plus the mythic Lancer-class heroes of Fate like Cú Chulainn and Karna. Fantasy lancer surnames tend to combine wind, sky, or dragon words with spear terminology: Highwind, Sunspear, Wyrmpike, Skypiercer.

A good lancer name should sound fast and forward-moving. Hard consonants and short second elements (Vance, Pike, Point, Wind) match a charge better than soft, drawn-out sounds; adding a rank or a Sir instantly places the character in a regiment or a royal court.
