Generate military unit names that follow real formation conventions: numbered divisions and regiments with proud nicknames (1st Cavalry Division, the Screaming Eagles), named battalions and brigades, and elite formations for fiction, wargames and RPG settings.

About military unit names

Real military units carry two names: an official designation and a nickname the soldiers actually use. The official form is number plus type plus branch, as in 1st Cavalry Division, 75th Ranger Regiment or 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, and higher formations often add a heraldic identity such as the Big Red One, the Screaming Eagles or Hell on Wheels. British and Commonwealth regiments swap numbers for tradition, so you get the Coldstream Guards, the Black Watch, the Gurkha Rifles and Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, each with centuries of battle honours behind it. Special operations forces tend to be terse and slightly mysterious: Delta Force, Sayeret Matkal, GSG 9, Vympel.

The nicknames follow their own logic. Some come from insignia (Blue Spaders, Red Tails), some from a battle (Rock of the Marne, Currahee), some from an enemy's insult adopted as a badge (Devil Dogs, Desert Rats, Old Contemptibles), and some from a founder (Merrill's Marauders, Popski's Private Army). This is why invented units feel thin when they are just Adjective plus Animal: the best names imply a history.

The list above gives you real formations from antiquity to the present, their nicknames, and a set of original units built to the same patterns, including regional regiments (Redwater Lancers, Coldharbor Dragoons) for fantasy or alternate-history settings. Use the official form for briefings, maps and orders of battle, and the nickname for dialogue and patches.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Give every important unit both an official designation (3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry) and a nickname (the Wolfhounds); the first goes on the map, the second goes in the mouths of your characters.
  • Use the correct size word: a regiment or battalion is hundreds of troops, a brigade a few thousand, a division ten to twenty thousand. A twelve-man team called a Division breaks immersion instantly.
  • Tie the nickname to something concrete such as insignia colour, a battle, an enemy insult or a founder's name, rather than to a generic virtue.
  • For British-style regiments, combine a place or patron with a troop type: Ironvale Grenadiers, Thornfield Yeomanry, Greymoor Light Horse.
  • Ordinal numbers add instant realism, and low or famous-sounding numbers (1st, 7th, 82nd, 101st) feel more storied than 3,417th.

Frequently asked questions

How are military units officially named?

Most modern armies use a number, a type and a branch, for example 82nd Airborne Division or 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. British and Commonwealth regiments keep traditional titles such as the Coldstream Guards or Black Watch, and special forces units often have short, deliberately vague names.

Where do unit nicknames like Screaming Eagles or Devil Dogs come from?

Usually from the unit's insignia (the 101st Airborne's eagle patch), a defining battle, or a name given by an enemy that the unit adopted proudly, as with the Marines' Devil Dogs and Britain's Desert Rats. Some honour a commander, like Merrill's Marauders.

What is the difference between a regiment, a battalion and a brigade?

A battalion is roughly 300 to 1,000 soldiers; a regiment is historically several battalions sharing a name and lineage; a brigade is a combined-arms formation of a few thousand troops. Divisions are made of several brigades, and corps of several divisions.

Can I use real unit names in fiction?

Real unit names are used constantly in war novels, films and games and are not trademarked. If you want freedom to invent history, use one of the original units here such as the Redwater Lancers or Kestrel Airborne, which follow the same conventions without real-world baggage.
