Generate medieval knight names built the way real ones were: a Norman, English, French, or German given name plus a territorial 'de' or 'of' surname, a nickname, or an epithet earned in battle. Covers Arthurian, Crusader, Hundred Years' War, and tournament-era styles for novels, RPGs, and heraldry projects.

About medieval knight names

Real medieval knights rarely had a fixed surname. A knight was known by his given name plus a marker of where he held land: William Marshal, Simon de Montfort, Bertrand du Guesclin, Ulrich von Liechtenstein. The particle changes with language, so 'de' or 'du' is French and Anglo-Norman, 'von' is German, 'da' or 'delle' is Italian, 'ap' is Welsh (son of), and 'Fitz' is Norman for son of, as in Reginald FitzUrse. Given names in the 12th to 15th centuries were drawn from a small pool: William, Robert, Roger, Hugh, Ralph, Walter, Geoffrey, Gilbert, and Baldwin appear again and again in the rolls of arms.

On top of that came epithets. Some were earned in battle or by temperament (Richard Coeur de Lion, Robert Curthose, Jean sans Peur), some described a wound or a feature (Halfhand, One-Eye, the Lame), and romance literature added heraldic titles like the Green Knight or the Knight of the Swan. Squires shared the same naming pattern but were addressed without 'Sir'.

The list below mixes historical figures such as John Chandos and Godfrey de Bouillon, Arthurian and chanson-de-geste heroes like Gawain and Ogier the Dane, and invented knights that follow the same rules, so you can pull a name straight into a Pendragon or D&D campaign or a historical novel and it will pass inspection.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Choose the particle to match the knight's homeland: de/du for Anglo-Norman and French, von for German, ap for Welsh, Fitz for Norman-descended families.
  • Use a place name after 'of' or 'de' rather than an invented family surname; landless knights were often known simply as Sir Given-Name plus an epithet.
  • Stick to period given names (William, Hugh, Walter, Geoffrey, Ralph) unless you're writing a deliberately fantastical setting.
  • Give epithets to knights with a reputation, not to everyone; one Blackshield in a company of forty knights is realistic.
  • Squires and pages share the naming pattern but drop the 'Sir' until they are dubbed, which makes a satisfying moment in a story.

Frequently asked questions

How were medieval knights actually named?

By given name plus a place-based descriptor: William of Ockham, Simon de Montfort, Ulrich von Liechtenstein. Hereditary surnames only became common in England around the 14th century, so earlier knights are best named by their lands or a nickname.

When is 'Sir' used with a knight's name?

'Sir' goes with the given name, so Sir William or Sir William Marshal, never Sir Marshal. The same rule applies today for British knighthoods.

Are these names suitable for Arthurian or D&D campaigns?

Yes. The Round Table names (Gawain, Bors, Lamorak) fit Pendragon-style games directly, and the invented Norman and German names work for any human knight, paladin, or cavalier in a medieval fantasy world.

Can I use these knight names commercially?

Historical figures and public-domain literary characters are free to reference, and the invented names are unrestricted. Just avoid names tied to specific modern franchises.
