Real cowboys of the 1860s to 1890s carried names that were mostly Anglo-American, with a heavy dose of Old Testament first names their parents had picked in Kentucky, Tennessee or Missouri: Jedediah, Ezekiel, Josiah, Silas, Amos, Elias. Everyday nicknames replaced those quickly on the trail. A cowhand was Slim, Shorty, Red, Curly, Tex or Dusty, and the surname often dropped off entirely because a drover might not offer it and nobody asked. Many trail hands were Black (Nat Love, Bill Pickett, Bass Reeves) or Mexican vaqueros, so names like Ignacio Vega or Ramón Ortega belong on a working ranch as much as Buck Landon.

Outlaws and gunfighters followed a different pattern: place-name handles (Texas Jack, the Durango Kid, Cimarron Kate), physical descriptors (Three-Fingered Jack, Big Nose Kate) and "the ___ Kid" for any young shooter. Lawmen were usually known by title and surname, Marshal Earp or Sheriff Garrett, which is why pairing a rank with a hard-sounding surname reads instantly as "the law."

A good cowboy name is short, easy to shout across a corral, and hints at where the man came from or what he looks like. Mix a biblical or plain first name with a two-syllable English or Scots-Irish surname (Caleb Strother, Wade Rutledge), then add a nickname if the character has earned one.
