Generate knight order names modeled on the Templars, Hospitallers, the Garter, and the Golden Fleece: religious military orders, royal chivalric orders, and fantasy brotherhoods of the sword. Ideal for medieval fiction, D&D paladin orders, and grand strategy games.
About knight order names
Historical orders of knighthood come in two flavors, and their names follow suit. The military religious orders of the Crusades were named for their headquarters or patron: the Knights of the Temple (Templars), the Knights of the Hospital of Saint John (Hospitallers), the Teutonic Knights, and the Spanish orders of Calatrava, Santiago, and Alcantara, each named for a castle or saint. The later royal chivalric orders were named for a symbol chosen by the founding monarch: the Order of the Garter, the Golden Fleece, the Elephant, the Thistle, the Dragon, and the Star.
That gives fiction two reliable formulas. 'Order of the [Symbol]' works when a king founds the order and picks a badge, ideally something specific and slightly odd like the Porcupine or the Ermine rather than a generic gem. 'Knights of [Place or Saint]' works when the order grew out of a church, hospital, or fortress. Fantasy adds a third: 'Knights of the [Adjective Object]' where the object hints at the order's oath, such as the Knights of the Sheathed Sword for peacekeepers or the Order of the Grave Wardens for undead hunters.
The list below runs from genuine historical orders through Arthurian and saintly names to invented brotherhoods with a story baked into the title.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose the founder before the name. A monarch's order takes a heraldic badge; a religious order takes a saint, relic, or headquarters.
- Pick a symbol that implies a story or duty (the Broken Lance, the Sheathed Sword) rather than a color plus a noun.
- Give the order a short informal name too. Nobody said 'Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon'; they said Templars.
- Decide the order's motto, colors, and one distinctive rule, and let the name reflect them so heraldry and lore stay consistent.
- Vary word choice across your world: Order, Knights, Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Chapter, and Company signal different founding cultures.
Frequently asked questions
How were real knight orders named?
Crusader military orders were named after their headquarters or patron saint, such as the Knights of the Temple and the Knights of the Hospital of Saint John. Later royal orders were named for a chosen emblem, like the Order of the Garter or the Order of the Golden Fleece.
What is the difference between a military order and a chivalric order?
Military orders like the Templars and Hospitallers were religious brotherhoods of warrior monks who fought and ran hospitals. Chivalric orders like the Garter were honors founded by kings to bind loyal nobles, and their members did not live under a monastic rule.
Can I use these names for my D&D paladin order or novel?
Yes. Real historical orders are public history you can reference, and the invented names are free to use in games, fiction, and other projects.
Should the order's name match its heraldry?
It should. The Order of the White Hart would bear a white stag on its banner, and members would likely wear its colors, so pick a name whose symbol you can actually draw on a shield.
