About jane austen names

Jane Austen named her characters with a very particular ear. Given names are drawn from a small, respectable pool that real English gentry used between 1790 and 1820: Elizabeth, Jane, Anne, Mary, Catherine, Charlotte, Emma, Fanny and Harriet for women; Charles, Edward, Henry, George, William, Thomas, James and Frederick for men. Exotic or showy first names are reserved for people Austen wants you to distrust, which is why Augusta Elton and Lady Susan Vernon sound grander than the heroines.

Surnames do most of the social work. Old landed families carry place-like names such as Darcy, Knightley, Bertram and Wentworth; trade money shows up in plainer names like Bingley and Cole; the clergy and navy get solid, unfussy surnames like Collins, Tilney and Harville. Titles matter too. "Sir Walter" is a baronet, "Lady Catherine" is the daughter of an earl, and "Miss Bennet" with no first name always means the eldest unmarried daughter.

This generator mixes canon names from all six novels, Lady Susan, Sanditon and The Watsons with new names built the same way, so an invented Miss Theodosia Greville or Captain Gilbert Lindsay fits on the same ballroom card as Mr Darcy.

Tips for choosing a name

  • For a heroine, pick an ordinary, well-worn given name (Anne, Elinor, Catherine) and let the surname carry the flavour; Austen saves flashy first names for rivals and schemers.
  • Match the title to the rank: Sir plus first name for a baronet or knight, Lady plus first name only for an earl's daughter, Lady plus surname for a knight's or baronet's wife.
  • Naval and army characters should sound brisk and plain (Captain Wentworth, Colonel Brandon); clergymen can carry slightly longer, softer surnames (Mr Collins, Mr Elton, Mr Tilney).
  • In dialogue, the eldest daughter is Miss Lucas and her younger sisters are Miss Maria Lucas and so on; getting this right instantly makes a scene feel period-accurate.
  • Double-barrelled surnames (Wentworth-Grey, Vane-Tempest) signal an inheritance or a marriage of two estates, and read as newer money than a single old name like Darcy.

Frequently asked questions

Where did Jane Austen get her character names?

Mostly from her own world. Austen borrowed surnames from neighbours, landowners and families in the Hampshire and Kent gentry (Bennet, Bingley, Wentworth and Dashwood were all real local names), and given names from the short list of Christian names in use among her class. The effect is realism rather than invention.

Which names in this list are canon and which are original?

The list opens with canon characters from Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Lady Susan, Sanditon and The Watsons. After that come original names that follow the same Regency conventions, so they suit fan fiction, original characters and period roleplay without clashing with the books.

How do Regency titles and forms of address work?

A baronet or knight is Sir plus first name (Sir Walter Elliot); his wife is Lady plus surname (Lady Elliot). The daughter of a duke, marquess or earl is Lady plus first name (Lady Catherine). Untitled gentlemen are Mr, and the eldest unmarried daughter of a family is simply Miss plus surname.

Can I use these names for a novel or a Regency RPG?

Yes. The original names are free to use in fiction, tabletop games and roleplay. Canon Austen characters are long out of copyright, though using Elizabeth Bennet or Mr Darcy as your own protagonist will read as a retelling rather than an original story.
