Bridgerton names follow the real conventions of Regency England (roughly 1811 to 1820), dressed up with a little romance-novel sparkle. Given names of the period were drawn from a fairly narrow, classical and biblical pool: Anthony, Benedict, Edmund and Simon for men; Daphne, Eloise, Penelope, Violet and Cressida for women. A good Bridgerton-style name balances a slightly ornate given name against a crisp, place-like surname: Georgiana Beaufort, Percival Ashworth, Rosalind Pemberton. Pair the name with a rank that suits the character's role in the marriage mart, whether ambitious mama, wallflower debutante, or reformed rake, and the ton will take notice.
