Generate Regency-era names in the style of Bridgerton: titled lords and ladies, ambitious debutantes, meddling mamas, and rakish dukes, all with the elegant Georgian given names and English aristocratic surnames of the 1810s ton.
About bridgerton names
Bridgerton names follow the real conventions of Regency England (roughly 1811 to 1820), dressed up with a little romance-novel sparkle. Given names of the period were drawn from a fairly narrow, classical and biblical pool: Anthony, Benedict, Edmund and Simon for men; Daphne, Eloise, Penelope, Violet and Cressida for women. Julia Quinn famously named the eight Bridgerton siblings alphabetically (Anthony through Hyacinth), which is a fun trick for writers building a large fictional family.
Surnames and titles do most of the work. Old English place-name surnames such as Featherington, Cowper, Basset and Danbury sound landed and respectable, while a title changes how a person is addressed entirely: Simon Basset is "the Duke of Hastings" or "Your Grace," never Mr. Basset. Peerage ranks run duke, marquess, earl, viscount, baron, and unmarried daughters of the gentry are "Miss" while married women take their husband's name ("Lady Bridgerton").
A good Bridgerton-style name balances a slightly ornate given name against a crisp, place-like surname: Georgiana Beaufort, Percival Ashworth, Rosalind Pemberton. Pair the name with a rank that suits the character's role in the marriage mart, whether ambitious mama, wallflower debutante, or reformed rake, and the ton will take notice.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match rank to role: a duke or viscount is the romantic prize, an unmarried "Miss" is the debutante, and a dowager or baroness is the matchmaking mama.
- Use address correctly in dialogue: dukes are "Your Grace," other peers are "Lord Surname," and a peer's wife is "Lady Surname," not "Lady Firstname" unless she is a duke's or earl's daughter.
- Give a family a naming pattern, like the alphabetical Bridgertons or a set of flower names for sisters, so readers can track large casts.
- Pick surnames that sound like English estates or villages (Ashford, Pemberton, Thornbury) and avoid modern or American-sounding surnames.
- Reserve the most florid names (Seraphina, Peregrine) for scene-stealers, and keep the heroine's name simple enough to repeat hundreds of times.
Frequently asked questions
How are Bridgerton characters named?
Julia Quinn used authentic Regency given names and English aristocratic surnames, then addressed characters by rank: the Duke of Hastings, Viscount Bridgerton, Lady Danbury, Miss Featherington. The eight Bridgerton siblings are named alphabetically from Anthony to Hyacinth.
What is the difference between Lord, Sir and Mr. in the Regency?
"Lord" is used for peers (barons and above) and the younger sons of dukes and marquesses; "Sir" is for baronets and knights; "Mr." is for untitled gentlemen, however wealthy. Simon Basset is "Your Grace" as a duke, while Colin Bridgerton, a viscount's younger brother, is simply Mr. Bridgerton.
Can I use these names for my own Regency romance or fanfiction?
Yes. Names of characters from the books and show belong to their creators, but the invented lords, ladies and titles here are free to use in original fiction, roleplay, tabletop games or fanfic without attribution.
Were names like Hyacinth and Cressida really used in the 1810s?
Yes, though they were uncommon. Flower and classical names appeared among the gentry, alongside far more frequent choices like Elizabeth, Mary, Charlotte, George, William and Henry. Mixing one or two rare names into a mostly common set feels most authentic.
