About Regency pet names

These are names for animals, not endearments for people: 1,000 names for dogs, cats, horses and cage birds in the manner of Regency England, Jane Austen's world. Most are single names that carry across a garden. The dogs follow the taste of the time for classical names (Juno, Caesar, Hector) and for short plain ones (Tray, Rover, Ponto, Dash), with French names for lapdogs such as Fidele, Bijou and Finette. Cats get the stock names Tib, Tabby, Puss and Grimalkin, a parrot is Poll, and a pet bullfinch is Bully.

Horses take names in racing-calendar style, from Eclipse and Highflyer to Skyscraper. Some belonged to real animals, three of them famous: Boatswain was Byron's Newfoundland, Copenhagen carried Wellington at Waterloo, and Marengo was Napoleon's gray charger. Other entries borrow from the age itself: its heroes (Nelson, Brummell, Prinny), its ballrooms and carriages (Quadrille, Phaeton, Curricle), its tea and supper tables (Syllabub, Negus, Ratafia), its fashions, spa towns, battles and ships.

Short forms of fashionable given names (Kitty, Lizzy, Ned) and titles (Duchess, The Colonel) fill out the list, and a small share comes from the people and houses of Austen's novels: Darcy, Bingley, Tilney, Pemberley. Treat the whole as period-flavored: much of it is period vocabulary used as names, not a record of what real animals were called.

How to choose Regency pet names

  • Match the name to the animal the way the period did: a classical or plain name for a sporting dog (Juno, Ponto, Ranger), a French one for a lapdog (Bijou, Fidele, Finette), a stock name for a cat (Tib, Grimalkin) and Poll for a parrot.
  • Say the name aloud as if calling it across a lawn. One or two syllables carry best, so keep a long entry such as Sir Peter Teazle or Puss in the Corner as the formal name and choose a short call name to go with it.
  • In fiction, let the name describe the owner. A sporting squire's pointer is Ponto or Don, a dandy's horse is Nonpareil or Corinthian, and a dowager's pug is Mopsy or Fidele.
  • If your story is set in a particular year, check any name that comes from an event. Trafalgar, Salamanca and Waterloo only make sense for an animal named after those battles were fought.
  • For two animals, use a pair from the list: Castor and Pollux, Pepper and Mustard, Punch and Judy, Pyramus and Thisbe.

Frequently asked questions

What did people in the Regency era name their dogs?

Classical names were a long-running fashion, so Juno, Caesar and Hector were familiar dog names, alongside short plain ones such as Tray, Rover, Ponto, Carlo and Dash. Lapdogs often had French or fanciful names like Fidele, Bijou and Mopsy. Lord Byron's Newfoundland was called Boatswain.

Are these real Regency animal names?

A few are: Boatswain was Byron's dog, Copenhagen was Wellington's charger at Waterloo and Marengo was Napoleon's. Many more follow naming habits of the time, such as classical names for dogs and Poll for a parrot. The rest are period words used as names, from Quadrille and Barouche to Syllabub and Ratafia, so treat the list as period style and not as a historical record.

Does the list use Jane Austen or Bridgerton names?

Austen's novels supply a small share: Darcy, Bingley, Knightley and Wentworth, houses such as Pemberley and Netherfield, and Lady Bertram's Pug as a nod to the lapdog in Mansfield Park. The list holds no names made up for the Bridgerton books or series and has no connection with them. Where a name such as Daphne or Hyacinth appears, it is here as a pastoral or flower name of the period.

Which names suit a cat, a horse or a bird?

For a cat, try Tib, Tabby, Grimalkin, Selima or Mouser. For a horse, the racing-calendar style gives Highflyer, Sorcerer, Whisker and Skyscraper, and carriage words such as Phaeton and Tilbury suit a driving pair. For a bird, Poll, Dicky, Linnet, Philomel and Chanticleer are all in the list.
